Memory Verse for the Week: Php 3:13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,
Topic: The Weight of the Love of this world
Today’s Reading: 1Jn 2:15-17
15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
Words of the Ministry:
Today we would be considering another weight which may seem harmless externally but is really harmful as it threatens our love and commitment for God. The Love of this world is a major weight affecting believers and a true test if we have the Love of God. The world is a system built by the devil and fallen men. It is full of the pleasures of this life. It could be summarized in the 3 temptations of Jesus Christ. It is built on our needs, our natural desire to show off the flesh and the natural quest to own the things of this life, have power influence and be respected among men. The worlds have been incorporated into our living so much that many saints actually live for the world.
The desire to make a name for ourselves has blinded many believers and churches. The world in some cases may appear harmless but is as deadly as sin. We see instances of the world with our earthly possessions, Jesus told the rich young ruler to dispose off his earthly riches in order to make the kingdom list but the young man couldn’t, rather he left sorrowfully because he had a great wealth (Mat 19.16-23). That wealth is the world, it is a passing riches and loving it above God is not loving God, Again we see a man intending to be a disciple of Jesus but said he wanted to go bury his father first (Mat 8.21-22), that burial is what we know as second burial, Jesus said he should leave that to the dead and follow him, disobeying Jesus to serve such tradition is loving the world.
Dear saints, to love the world is give your best love to the things of this world, the good things we can see (lust of the eyes), those things that exalt our personality and authority before men (lust of the flesh) and the things that gives us dominion over other men making us have a wrong estimate of ourselves in this world (Pride of life). These were the weight that made Adam and Eve lose the garden. We must be careful not to replace God with things God gives. The author says once we do that, the Love of God is not in us. Check with your experience, what do you seek? What you seek, is it because you love God and want to obey him or because you want to exalt yourself? May the Lord grant us light.
