Theme: Things to leave behind (5)

Topic: The Weight of Past successes and achievements

Today’s Reading: 1Co 9:26-27

26  I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:

27  But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

Words of the Ministry:

Within the week we have seen a number of weights that must be left behind to ensure we maintain a consistent walk with God. In the last few days, we have seen a series of negative weights but today, we intend to consider a seeming positive weight which could equally affect our walk with God. The matter to be considered today is that of positive achievements and successes. It may come as a surprise to many that even our achievements could be a stumbling block to our future.

As we walk with the Lord, we must like Paul put our body under subjection to ensure that our previous successes don’t deter us from seeing the future ahead. Paul who wrote our memory verse said he doesn’t see himself as someone who has arrived but rather, he puts his seeming success behind while he reaches for those things ahead. From today’s reading, we again see him saying he puts his body under subjection so as to ensure his effort is not in vain. Looking at the CV of this apostle, we see a man who wrote 2/3 of the New Testament, he had heavenly revelations and visions than all other apostles, he understood sound doctrines than all other apostles and he did many miraculous works, despite all he achieved, he said all is like a weight, he put all behind him to seek what is ahead of him.

Dear saints, many have settled for monuments, such monuments could be a Church building, previous sermon preached, reputation among the brethren, Christian sacrifices and chastity of the past, healing miracles, gospel campaigns, gifts of the spirit etc., such monuments are a great danger to our momentum. If we are not weary of it, we would end up celebrating our past history while our future is unattended to, so many have even left their first love because of their past successes, they are quick to mention how many hours they use to pray, days of fasting, seed sown, assistance rendered or bible teaching. What they don’t realize is that our love for God is as valid as now. We must remember what Jesus told the Church at Ephesus, Remember thy first love… (Rev 2.4-5). We must lay aside every weight of past successes to seek our future reward, may the Lord grant us light.
