Words of the Ministry:
Today we want to look at the importance of obedience. As believers, why should we obey God either directly through his word, spiritual guidance or those he has placed as authorities above us. This is a very wide subject but I would limit it to just one benefit of answered prayers because of time and space. From our memory verse, the Lord said if we abide in him (new birth) and his words abide in us (Study, listen and Obedience), we shall ask what we will and it shall be done. Nothing excites a believer more than answered prayers, many times we ask ourselves why the unanswered prayers, why does it seem others get answers to their prayers earlier than we do, despite verses like our memory verse? The answer is in obedience. In my estimation, I would say obedience is the greatest lessons there is to learn in our walk with God. When we understand this, our concept of Christianity changes. Obedience is the fulcrum on which all graces move, be it faith power, miracles, divine revelations or ministry.
The Lord Jesus, from our bible text is saying when our obedience is established we would ask what we want and would get it, the reason is simple, because God has been able to use the transforming experiences of obedience to work on our being, we can’t ask amiss, just like continuous obedience to our parents overtime can make us predict with much accuracy what our parents would do and not do, we become so familiar with their ways such that we seem not to ask for what they are not ready to do at a particular time, so it is with God, when God’s word has found adequate expression in us, we can never ask amiss, we can’t ask to satisfy our lust because our disposition and attitude would be one with God. As we walk with God, we too would be able to say, father I thank you because you always hear me, that would be because just like Jesus, we are not after our personal will but God’s will.
We see a lot of faith exercises fail today because many have not learnt the importance of obedience. When we learn to obey God, we would be able to separate between faith and self-promptings because we have known him. Such knowing comes from dealing with our will and desire, that is organic growth in life. A 5-year-old child may get more no from his father than an 18-year-old that lives in obedience. Many times in the gospel, we see Jesus heal some sick folks and leave others sick (Jhn 5.3-14,Mrk 1.35-38) because he lived a life of obedience, he didn’t let his natural compassion rule him, he would rather say, as I see my father heal, I heal, meaning I am just doing the will of my father, no more no less (Jhn 5.19-21). We can see that answers to prayer is not necessarily because of how intense we pray but because of our growth in life which is nothing but our level of obedience, just as disobedience was Satan’s master key to defeat man, obedience is man’s master key to rule and have dominion over Satan, 2 Cor 10:6 “6 And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled” KJV, amen.
