17 Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught?
18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.
19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
Rom 12.1-2
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Words of the Ministry
Within the week we have seen the power of positive confession, we considered both the good and evil consequences associated with our speech. Having realized how important our speech is, I like to dedicate some time to learn the way of victory, how do we overcome negative confessions and maximize the power of positive confession. In our previous lessons, we learnt about the 3 parts of man namely the Spirit, the soul and the body, while many are familiar with the physical body because it can be seen, they seem to care less about the soul. The soul is the psychological part of man and in the soul we have the mind, the will and the emotion. I would concentrate more on the mind, the will and the emotion today. We would notice from scripture that the bible says in Rom 12.1-2 that we are to present our bodies to God holy and acceptable but this is to be done by we renewing our mind. So, the end product of an acceptable sacrifice is the by product of a renewed mind, in other words, if our minds are not renewed, we cannot be presented as a holy sacrifice, our members including our speech would be defiled.
From today’s reading, we see why many fail to overcome negative confessions despite several trials, Jesus speaking concerning what defiles a man said it is not what we take into our stomach but what comes out of us. By what comes out of us, it includes our speech, the problem with negative speech most times is that it appears spontaneous, it seems like a natural reaction like someone blinking his eye but actually it is a product of our mind, what we have been meditating on consciously or unconsciously. Our spontaneous reaction and comments are just an expression of what we have within us, in our mind. Our emotions is therefore a mirror of our constitution. Why many speak failure, fear, defeat, doubt, sickness, etc is because that is what they have fed their minds with,. The little seed of negative television viewing, social media interaction, negative talk, bad news from here and there eventually finds the mind as a soil to grow and except we fumigate our heart with the word of God, those negative weeds would grow and get out of control.
The bible admonishes us to meditate upon the word of God, by meditating on the word, we are accepting God’s idea of our situation, we are renewing our mind from the corruption of the fallen nature and gradually we speak what God wants to us to speak. We begin to speak the word of God as occasion demands, it becomes spontaneous even in our dreams. I like the verse Php_4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. As we meditate on those things, even our speech gets refined. Dear saint, you are to renew your mind, it’s a deliberate action to save your future, God won’t do it for you. You must make up your mind to consume less of the evil words and news and spend time on the word of God. Please keep in mind our once a moth physical meeting coming up this Sunday the 25th of February, Christ is our life.
