Theme: Swimming against the tide (7)
Memory Verse: 2Co 6:17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,
Topic: Enoch walked with God in a perverse generation
Today’s Reading: Heb 11:5-6
5 By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, “and was not found, because God had taken him”; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God. 6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. NKJV
Words of the Ministry:
Today as we conclude our lessons on swimming against the tide, I would like to comment on Enoch, he was the 7th descendant of Adam from the line of Seth, he was corresponding to Lamech the 7th descendant of Adam from the line of Cain. It is good we understand the societal situation in which Enoch lived, After the fall of Adam and the death of Abel, there was global evil being perpetrated by mankind, evil became natural and man began to do whatever comes to their corrupted mind. Man was in a state of debauchery. There were primarily two-family trees traceable to Adam, the line of Cain which was known for evil continually and the line of Seth, the third son of Adam. Lamech lived as the 7th generation from Adam but was a great contrast to Enoch, he was the first man to practice polygamy, he was a murderer like his fore-father Cain and he raised children that forged weapons of war. He was a godless and evil man (Gen 4).
Enoch lived in that generation where evil was the order of the day, the bible said he was a preacher of righteousness (Jud 14-15), he lived a life of faith as he walked with God. The account of Enoch could be read in Gen 5.21. Despite the depravity of his age, Enoch lived a life well pleasing to God. He didn’t follow the multitude to do evil, rather he walked with God consistently until God took him. The account said when he was 65 years old when he began his walk with God for 300 years and God took him. He was the first person the clause walked with God was used to describe. We later see Enoch’s ending having another first, he was the first man that God took away without tasting death. We can see from the life of Enoch that God gets so used to a man that he would want to be with him forever. Keep in mind that at this time, the Spirit of God only visited man on earth for fellowship, God didn’t reside in man so as Enoch fellowshipped with God, God had to take him to be with him not having reasons to come visiting earth for his sake.
Saints, there is a lot to learn from the life of Enoch, although he lived in a corrupt generation, he chose to rather live to please God, his family from the line of Cain lived in sin, they were well to do and had even built a city in those days but Enoch was not enticed. Many today doubt God because of the wealth of the unsaved, they think wealth is a pointer that God is pleased with a man. Again, we see consistency in the life of Enoch, the bible said once he began his walk with God, he continued till he left the earth, can that be said concerning you, how is your fellowship with God, is it consistent or on a part-time basis? We never saw a lengthy account of his life, he didn’t build cities nor have many children, cattle’s and gold but before God he was a man greatly valued and exalted, God visited the earth for his sake. Lastly, I like to comment on his eventual departure, the account said he waked with God until God took him, that is similar to the rapture and it is noteworthy we emphasize that the rapture is not going to be a surprise as many think, it is for those who are walking with God now, it is a continuation of their love and fellowship. Like Enoch, God would come to pick his lovers among men.
