Words of the Ministry:
As we continue the theme, swimming against the tide, we would today consider Rahab, one of the two women mentioned in Hebrews 11. We can read the story of Rahab in Joshua 2. Rahab was a known prostitute from the land of Jericho who through an act of faith became not just forgiven but a part of God’s people and was also mentioned as one of those in the genealogy of Jesus Christ. The account said she saw two men who were spies from the camp of Israel and chose to hide them from her people. She took a risk that could have cost her life and that of her family. She claimed she did this out of Godly fear having heard what the God of Israel had done in the past. Her action could have been in the contrary, she could have for financial and material benefit exposed the children of Israel but she chose to hide them, going against what most Canaanites would have done and it eventually paid off.
The imagery we just considered could be likened to that of many unbelievers who are offered the gospel of the kingdom. They are given a choice to stand with God’s people in his kingdom by being born again. Many because of their current status, family background and name, material benefit or the enjoyment of worldly lust would not obey nor align with God. As we saw in the story of Rahab, her choice not only saved her from death with others in Jericho but also gave her a new life in Jericho as she became numbered with God’s people and had to change her trade. Our new birth is to bring us into the will of God which sometimes affects our previous life, distorts our relationships and makes us at variance with friends and family but we must choose to pay the price to be free from the destruction that would sweep the world. To accept Christ as your Lord and savior is to swim against your worldly life, it is to hide the Holy Spirit in you against the will of the devil, the enemy, Satan would hate you for that but that is what God demands.
Saints, the choice of Rahab that day made her part of God’s heritage as recorded in Matt 1:5 “Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab, Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth, Obed the father of Jesse,” NIV. And she was also mentioned among the heroes of faith. The Christian journey could atimes be fierce and fearful, we may have reasons to doubt walking with God, the devil could come suggesting to us that our past is our problem but we must remember Rahab, how God forgave her past and she became one with God’s people so likewise our act of faith which is accepting the Lord has forgiven us of our past and placed us into the kingdom of his dear son. We could be labeled for our choice by those in Jericho, they would misunderstand why we prefer Christ to family and worldly enjoyment, we may even be ostracized but soon enough we would receive the reward of choosing Christ over Jericho when the Lord returns, amen.
