Words of the Ministry:
Today we want to look at another aspect of Godly parenting that some people overlook, overdo or misunderstand altogether, because times are changing we are beginning to import certain ideas that are not only foreign to the bible but to our society, such ideas have failed from societies where there are being imported from and because we want to engage in some western form of civilization we swallow it, hook, line and sinker. The matter before of today is child discipline using the cane and punishment.
We have learnt that to raise proper children, we parents must also be proper, we must lead by example, we must raise them knowing they are to meet God’s need, we have to sacrifice time for our children keeping in mind we would reap a reward, good or bad. The issue before us today is the use of cane and punishment, in addition to all we have learnt we must at times use the cane as some life lessons can only be enforced through discipline. Parents must learn to use a commensurate punishment to drive some points home, such discipline should be out of love of your children for proper guidance. It shouldn’t be a way to vent your anger or frustration of the day. In using cane (rod) we are expected to do it with moderation as not to deliberately inflict pain and bruises on our children. In place of cane, we could also punish, for instance children could be asked to kneel, toys could be withdrawn, children could be denied from going out to play etc, all should be moderate.
Concerning discipline, the bible says God disciplines his own Heb 12:6 “6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.” KJV. It is not out of hatred but love, just as God disciplines his children, we must discipline ours to ensure they are in line. We need to realize there is but a short window to instill such discipline in our children, when they get to a certain age, it may not even be possible, can you imagine a 20-year-old boy being told to kneel down or being flogged by the father, it may be difficult fI not Impossible and at such times, the negative attitude in them would be permanent except through prayers and negative experiences can they be redeemed. Prov 19:18 “Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying.”, of a truth, parents can barely stand their children crying but if we love them, we must make them cry today so that we won’t cry for them tomorrow. There is a level of disobedience in every child inherited by our natural life from Adam, such can only be driven out by discipline, that’s why we encourage parents to spend time with their children, observe them, engage them and be open to questions, I like to end with this verse, Prov 22:15 Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.
