Today’s Reading: Num 6:2-7
2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, when either man or woman shall separate themselves to vow a vow of a Nazarite, to separate themselves unto the Lord: 3 He shall separate himself from wine and strong drink, and shall drink no vinegar of wine, or vinegar of strong drink, neither shall he drink any liquor of grapes, nor eat moist grapes, or dried. 4 All the days of his separation shall he eat nothing that is made of the vine tree, from the kernels even to the husk. 5 All the days of the vow of his separation there shall no razor come upon his head: until the days be fulfilled, in the which he separateth himself unto the Lord, he shall be holy, and shall let the locks of the hair of his head grow. 6 All the days that he separateth himself unto the Lord he shall come at no dead body. 7 He shall not make himself unclean for his father, or for his mother, for his brother, or for his sister, when they die: because the consecration of his God is upon his head KJV
Words of the Ministry:
Amen, yesterday we began looking at the concentration of the Nazarene using Samson as a case study and applying it to our individual lives as believers. While we emphasized on the need for Samson to keep his hair all the days of his life as he was not only born a Nazarene, he was to live as a Nazarene all the days of his life. Drawing a parallel to our calling, we said our salvation was to be a life-long commitment unto the Lord, like Samson, we are today’s Nazarene and we are expected to live faithful to the Lord all the days of our life. We learnt yesterday that a Nazarene must keep his hair and never shave, the implication as applied was that as believers we are to bear the shame of our calling. We must be ready to be misunderstood and called names for our faith. Today we want to look at the remaining concentration a Nazarene must keep. From our text we see that a Nazarene must also avoid strong drink and avoid relating with the dead.
The implication of not taking strong drink and vinegar from the vine is that a Nazarene must be separated from the enjoyment of this world. As Nazarenes, we must not love the world, in 1 John 2:15-17, the bible says 15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world — the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life — is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever. As new covenant Nazarene, the passing beauty of the world should not motivate us to sin, we must deny our desires in other to please our God. Many like Demas have loved the world and abruptly ended their Nazarene concentration. We must be weary of the devil as he dangles the good things of this world to distract us from giving our best love to God, amen.
The next thing we must avoid as our text teaches is making contact with the dead, a Nazarene was commanded not to touch the dead even if the dead was his father or mother or any loved one. By implication to touch the dead or show love to the dead is to have a close affinity that would influence your relationship with the unsaved. Many saints today are not growing accordingly because of the influence of their parents, brother, friends or spouse. The close relations they keep always pull them back from going all out to please the Lord. The bible said we have been bought with a price and we don’t belong to ourselves anymore (1 Cor 6.20), our pursuit should be to please our new owner, the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus giving a condition for following him said in Luke 14:26-27 “26 “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. 27 And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. NKJV. To hate one’s father and loved ones means to prefer Jesus to them (Mat 10.37). May the Lord grant us light.
