Words of the Ministry:

Still on the ministry of the word, we learnt that the word of God is the principal means of transformation and that we must have proper attitude towards it because all scripture regardless of it being in the old or new testament is instructive and has God’s authority. Yesterday we saw that the word is for doctrines or teachings. The primary source of Church doctrine isn’t our feelings, dreams or prevailing economic situations rather it is the word of God. When we allow individuals make their thought a doctrine, it brings confusion. The early church was said to continue daily in the Apostles doctrine (Acts 2.42), several apostles, one doctrine. I like us to proceed today by considering the second ministry of the word which is reproof or in modern day English, rebuke.

Many love to read verses that comfort them, that gives them assurance of salvation, provision, protection and interventions. They memorize it and they severally recall it as a way of expressing faith in order to see such things come to pass. While the word of God is good in all situations we need to realize that the ultimate thing God does to us through his word is not to give us something as the greatest gift he can give a man is the Holy Spirit, the greatest thing he can do is not do give us houses, cars, children, marriage partner etc rather it is to make us something. To make us something is the greatest benefit we get from God and this comes from the word firstly as we learnt yesterday through teachings or doctrines and today through rebuke. The word of God rebukes us, cautioning us till we live an overcoming life. Such rebuke may come as inferences from bible passages, bible character stories or teachings.

When many read bible stories like that of David or Abraham and the immoral life they lived, they tend to lean more on the weaknesses and never learn from the rebuke they got from the Lord. Some say Abraham was a friend of God, he lied and was severally blessed with goods but they also forget that the event brought Haggai into his life, Haggai brought in Ishmael and Ishmael brought in a comma to his linage. Same with David, he had his way with Uriah’s wife but eventually lost the son he had. Ananias and Sapphira in the new testament Church lied and were rebuked. Some of this stories we call embarrassing in the bible were left in there through the leading of the Spirit to teach us and rebuke us. To make us learn to avoid same pit holes. When we go to church and the preacher talks about a bible character that depicts your weakness, we must appreciate it as a rebuke and seek the way of deliverance, we must not blame the pastor or hate God for exposing us, our today’s reading says in Prov 15:31 He who listens to a life-giving rebuke will be at home among the wise.
