Text: 2 Tim 4:3-4
For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. NIV
Words of the Ministry:
We have been looking at the theme, ministry of word and we have emphasized that without a proper response to the word, our Christian walk would be stunted and our testimony would be half baked. We began the week by emphasizing that the word is God’s mean’s of transformation. We also did learn about the kind of attitude we must have towards the word contrasting two disciples, Peter and Judas. Yesterday we learnt that all scripture is God’s breath, emphasizing that all scripture has God’s seal and authority and can be said to be God’s word regardless of it being in the old or new testament, be a story or a biography, a teaching or an illustration. We also said as Christians, we are to look into the bible to see what is applicable to the Christian church as practiced between the book of Acts to revelation.
Today we are looking at the word of God as a means of doctrines. By doctrines we mean biblical “teachings” that are found in God’s Word. The bible contains a number of teaching on almost every subject of the human life and can be applied practically to our daily living. The apostles who were the foundation stones gave themselves to prayer and word study to ensure they have proper doctrines for the church which we are expected to live by today. It is expected that preachers and believers in general should approach the bible to seek out its teaching concerning any subject. It is a way to avoid false teaching and exploitation carried out by some preachers. Paul celebrated the Berean Christians because they didn’t just accept what he taught them but daily examined the scripture to be sure it was true. Believers should not just believe what is being taught, they must check it out looking at the text and pretext to avoid cunning manipulations and when it is confirmed true, they must bow to it.
Paul warned in 2 Tim 4.3-4, that a time would come that men would not want to bear sound doctrine, that time is now, men don’t want sound doctrine, they want to live their lives the way they want it, they see the word as a constraint to their live. Many forget that they have been bought with a price and they would give account of their living to God at the end of this age. Saints me must be vigilant and live soberly knowing the devil, the enemy of our soul would do everything possible to deny us of eternal fellowship with God. May God grant us light.
