Words of the Ministry:
We began considering the theme, experiencing the miraculous by looking at the life of certain noble bible characters who experienced a life changing miracle. We intend to draw some light from their experiences to make it a guide as we trust God to be next in-line for a supernatural turn-around. We began our study by looking at the life of Mary the mother of Jesus who experienced an impossible miracle by believing the word of God, concerning her attitude we learnt she believed the word, she kept her tongue and she saw it through over a period of nine months, holding unto God’s promise. We also saw the case of Simon peter who obeyed the unreasonable word of God concerning his business, he acted on the word and got a net breaking testimony. Today we intend to look at another bible character named Bartimaeus but normally called blind Bartimaeus because of his blindness.
The account of blind Bartimaeus (Mark 10.46-52) is a touching one and full of light, the account said he heard Jesus was passing as he couldn’t see because he was blind, he then cried out to the Lord to have mercy on him. Those around tried to silence him but he persisted with a loud voice until the Lord stood still and called for him asking what he wanted. It is worthy of note that he threw away his cloak, the cloak in those days was the most important property of the poor especially the impotent as it served as an outward garment for cold, covering and as blanket or bed at night, for the blind, it was a means of collecting coins thrown at him to avoid searching because he couldn’t see. We see a leap of faith as he throws away what his life depended upon to seek Jesus, on meeting Jesus he went straight to tell the lord what he wanted, Jesus seeing his attitude said, his faith made him whole and immediately he received his sight.
From the summary above, we see a few points that positioned blind Barthimeus for a miracle. We noticed that though he was blind, he opened his mind to the good news of what Jesus could do. While he never saw anybody healed of blindness, he had faith God could start with him. We also saw his persistence despite the discouragement of the crowd around him, he didn’t mind the limitation of not being able to locate Jesus even if he had to walk to Jesus, he was really loud for Jesus to hear him in a large crowd. We also see a man who didn’t consider a plan B as the account said he throw away his cloak, he didn’t think like many believers, if Jesus doesn’t do it, I would resort to my old ways. We can also notice he knew what he wanted. He wasn’t dancing around; he was particular not saying open my eyes or give me alms.
Saints we have a lot to learn in other to experience a life changing miracle like blind Bartimaeus, many today remain in their world of blindness and limitation because instead of meditating on the goodnews of what Jesus does, they spend time on negative stories flying around and as a result they miss their miracle. Too many are not persistent, looking at our bible reading for today, many believe God exist but find it difficult to believe he rewards persistence. Another matter is that of having alternatives to God while some also get discouraged by the crowd, what people are saying and the experiences of others, lastly too many have not decided on what they really want. They have a wide blanket of too many possibilities and that’s why they don’t experience a miracle. Please join us tomorrow for our weekly word feast as we consider the third revelational gift of the Holy Spirit.
