Life Capsule for Today August 9, 2023
Theme: Beware of Covetousness (5)
Memory Verse: Luk 12:15 And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.
Topic: The image of the covetous
Today’s Reading: Col 3:5-6 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
6 For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:
2Pe 2:2 -3 And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.
3 And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.
Words of the Ministry:
Saints, today we would be considering the matter of covetousness by looking at it from the lens of others. Atimes for us to know the evil in our deeds, we must see ourselves as the word and the world around us sees us. Many people still feel all is well because they don’t see the true picture of who they are. For instance when we look at the account of David and Beersheba who was Uriah’s wife, David never saw how wicked his act was until he was confronted by Nathan the prophet (you may read 2 Sam 12), David said a rich man from Nathans story that took the wealth of the poor should be dealt with, in his words he said in 2Sa 12:5-6 “And David’s anger was greatly kindled against the man; and he said to Nathan, As the LORD liveth, the man that hath done this thing shall surely die: And he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.” We would immediately notice that David had a good understanding of what it feels like to suffer the bite of a covetous man when he viewed it not as the culprit but as the judge, so likewise is the case of the rich man in Luke 12.13-21,in verse 20 Jesus called him a fool. Although he saw himself as a wise investor, before God he was a fool that labored and eventually didn’t enjoy his labor because of Greed. A fool according to the bible is a man that says there is no God. So not only is a covetous Christian wicked and worthy of death, he also shows that he doesn’t believe in God.
The bible describes a man that is covetous as an idolater, such a man could be a professing Christian but is not different from a man that worships other gods, in 1 Cor 6.9-10, Paul was making a list of those that can’t inherit the kingdom of God, please note the letter was written to the Church and not the club and he did mention covetous. In 1 Cor 5.11, Paul again said the covetous would not even have an inheritance in God’s Kingdom. In 2 Pet 2.3, Peter was talking about the false teachers and prophets and he said one of the distinguishing attribute is that they would be covetous, lovers of money and their end is damnation. Paul while stating the requirements for being either an elder or a deacon (1 Thim 3.1-13), he said such a person must not be greedy, in other words, a covetous person is not worthy of Christian leadership. We can therefore see that a covetous person is not only wicked, he is an idolater, he is worthy of death, he is a fool, he is open to the wrath of God, he has no inheritance with God, he doesn’t believe in God, he is a false prophet and he is not qualified to serve in Church.
Dears saint, check yourself, are you coveteous? May the Lord grant us light.
