Life Capsule for Today August 9, 2023
Theme: Beware of Covetousness (4)
Memory Verse: Luk 12:15 And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.
Topic: Godliness is incomplete without contentment
Today’s Reading: 1Ti 6:6 -10
6 But godliness with contentment is great gain.
7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.
8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.
9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.
10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
Words of the Ministry:
Yesterday we saw Jesus’ definition of covetousness, we did emphasize that covetousness from Jesus’ own view goes beyond having a strong desire for what others own to we wanting more despite having excess, we also said it is also the desire to want to spend all we own on ourselves not minding what others go through. Today I want to emphatically state that we can never live a Godly live if we are covetous. To be Godly is the practice of conforming to the laws and wishes of God, the bible in Psalm 4.3 says, but know that the LORD hath set apart him that is godly for himself: the LORD will hear when I call unto him. The preceding verse is the heritage of the Godly but only accessible when we are satisfied with God, when we see God as our reward, when we look away from the wealth of others and appreciate our needs as it is being met.
From today’s reading, we see why many struggle with the Christian walk, why it seems they can’t have a sustained victory over the enemy. The reason is not farfetched, it is because they have not learnt contentment. The author mentioned the major requirement for our daily living which is food and raiment or clothing. That does not in any way suggest we must not own houses or cars rather it means that even when you can’t afford them and you have food and cloth to wear you should have the attitude of contentment. Verse 10 saying the love of money is the root of all evil qualifies verse 9 which says those that would be rich, which actually means those that love money in order to be rich are drawn to several temptation. To love money here is not saying we should hate money rather it means loving money above God, the same way it is used in Luke 14.26 and Mat 10.37. To love money as used here is to be willing to neglect all Godly principles to get wealth by all means.
Dear saints, we brought nothing into this world, while it is good to work hard and pray hard in order to meet our daily needs, we must not cross the line of covetousness as we seek increased comfort and satisfaction, there is but a thin line between meeting our needs and meeting our greed, a situation where we do things not because we are in need but just to impress those around us or just to have extra thereby denying others. May the Lord grant us light. Our WORD FEAST holds today by 5pm, please come with family and friends. Christ is our LIFE.
