Words of the Ministry
From hearing a bno, to self denial to fasting
Yesterday we established that suffering is part of the believer’s journey in knowing Christ. Today we go further to understand that suffering is also a mark of sonship. The scripture makes it clear that one of the evidence that God deals with us as sons is chastening. In other words, God corrects, trains, and disciplines those He has accepted as His own. This means that not all discomfort is demonic; some are developmental.
Many believers misinterpret correction as rejection. They assume that when things become difficult, God has abandoned them. But the Word shows us the opposite: it is because you are a son that God engages you in discipline. Suffering in this context is not punishment from sin, but training for maturity. Just like a father trains a child, God also trains His sons through seasons that stretch their patience, humility, obedience, and trust. At times we get a rebuke or a no from God, some other times, God demands self-denial and at times it is a call to more spiritual discipline like a long fast.
If everything in your life is always easy, nothing is shaping you. Growth requires resistance. Just as muscles are built under pressure, spiritual maturity is also formed under divine dealings that may not be comfortable. We must therefore learn not to despise the process. Sonship is not only about inheritance; it is also about formation. And formation often comes through seasons we do not immediately understand.
As we continue this week, may we begin to see God allowed suffering not as rejection, but as divine investment in our spiritual maturity that would eventually lead to our glorification. Like today reading says, if we suffer with him bear shame for him and go all out against our will, we too would be glorified with him, may the Lord grant us light.
