Theme:        Reasons for Christmas         (1)

Topic: The reason why?

Memory Verse:    Matt 1:21

21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” NKJV

Today’s Reading:          Luke 1:26-33

26 Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!”

29 But when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was. 30 Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus. 32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. 33 And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”

NKJV

Words of the Ministry

Praise the Lord saints, we are days away from Christmas. Christmas celebration has become more of a ritual to many as they don’t even know why they celebrate it beyond the fact that Jesus is assumed to be born on that day. we intend to look at some of the reasons why we do need to celebrate the birth of Christ beyond religion. The several reasons why God had to become a man. There has been an ongoing argument especially in this season of the year about the birth of Christ, to some the argument is against his birth date while to others, it is, if there is even any reason to celebrate his birth in the first place as people celebrate death anniversary after the passing of a person and not his birthday. This week’s lesson is not going to address either of the two arguments rather we would focus on the life benefits the birth of Christ affords us and the organic implication of remembering that glorious event.

The bible tells us about the creation and the fall of man, it also records the several agreements man had with God, it began with our fathers in the days of Adam, Noah and Abraham. We notice the recurring need for man to be redeemed from his fall in the book of Genesis and the limitations in every kind of animal sacrifice brought to redeem man because no animal was qualified to substitute man, the best that could be achieved was to cover the sins of man for a season. Man’s problem on the one hand was that he had several sins hence the need for animal sacrifices but beyond that he had another problem, man himself was sin, he was an embodiment of sin after eating from the tree of knowledge of good and evil and the best thing for man was that another man died in place of mankind. Such sacrifice needed to come from a man who was perfectly sinless and who himself had eternal life to substitute for the dead and dying man.

Based on the above-mentioned requirement, animals could not meet God’s demand, angels could not because they weren’t mankind, natural man could not because all men were sinners and could not pay for the sin of others in that state and lastly God could not just transform to a man to pay the price because he needed to be born of mankind to qualify as the substitute for man. God, despite his love could not overlook the condition of man and give him eternal life because he God is not just holy but also righteous and such an act would go against his righteousness.   As we notice the complexity of this situation, the devil on the other hand held man captive, he was doing all within his might to see that the promise of the seed of the woman (Gen 3.15) would never come to pass. He tempted Cain, made him a wild man thinking he was the promised seed, when he failed he killed Abel seeing he was religious, his fallen angels polluted mankind to ensure no pure human can be born to redeem man, the devil kept on until God showed him how foolish he was.
