Theme: The several Titles of Jesus (7)

Topic: The bread of life

Memory Verse:    John 6:35

And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.  NKJV

Today’s Reading: John 6:22-27

22 On the following day, when the people who were standing on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other boat there, except that one which His disciples had entered, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with His disciples, but His disciples had gone away alone —  23 however, other boats came from Tiberias, near the place where they ate bread after the Lord had given thanks —  24 when the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they also got into boats and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus. 25 And when they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “Rabbi, when did You come here?” 26 Jesus answered them and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.  27 Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.” NKJV

Words of the Ministry

Today I would be considering another title of Jesus which is Jesus as the bread of life. We see Jesus using several metaphors and types in scripture and as we observe his audience, we would realize they seem to relate with or understand what he tries to communicate to them at least at the surface level. For instance, bread was known as a staple food accessible to almost every stratum of the Jewish society, it was used during festivals and may just be a staple food everywhere you went in those days. If we remember the temptation of Jesus, the devil suggested bread. In the Old Testament God gave them manna, a flakelike substance just like bread. So down through history bread was eaten and was popular among the Jews. The setting of today’s reading was when Jesus multiplied bread to feed 5000 men aside women and children, the account said the next day, the people came looking for Jesus again probably to eat bread like the previous day but this time they were offered the real bread, the one that came down from heaven.

The bible said Jesus told them, he is the bread of life and whoever eats him would not be hungry nor thirst. By implication Jesus was saying that the satisfaction you get in the physical world to meet the daily food needs of the body, I give to you and much more. Christ said he was the bread that lives and gives life, eating him would bring an end to their spiritual hunger as they would hunger no more.  We would recall the prayer Jesus taught his disciples they were to pray for their daily bread, while that was understood as daily need being met so is the bread of life of daily spiritual need being met. In Mathew 5, Jesus said blessed are those that hunger and thirst after righteousness for they shall be filled. They would hunger no more. Jesus here was telling us that once we find him as food, the spiritual hunger in our spirit that is depicted as unrest (Mat 11.28-30) would be met. Dear reader are you still hungry, is your spirit still thirsty, Jesus is calling, why not give your life to him today and find satisfaction for your spirit, soul and body. May the Lord grant us light.
