Today’s Reading: Exo 25.10-11
10 And they shall make an ark of shittim wood: two cubits and a half shall be the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof, and a cubit and a half the height thereof.
11 And thou shalt overlay it with pure gold, within and without shalt thou overlay it, and shalt make upon it a crown of gold round about.
Acts 7.48-49
48 Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet,
49 Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest?
Words of the Ministry
In the course of our studies this week, we saw that the Lord dwells in our Spirit and also in our bodies. Today I would like to paint a picture of what this means using the old testament type of the ark of God. As we study the scriptures, we see the fulfilment of the ark in the life of the saints. In the old testaments, God commanded the building of the ark (Exo 25.10-22), the ark was to house the commandment of God, it was to be placed in the holy of Holies under the mercy seat. The temple in those days had 3 parts, the outer court, the holy place and the holy of holies or the most holy place. Today we see that the temple is a type of man’s body, the outer court is like the physical body seen and accessed by all, the holy place is represented by the human soul while the Holy of holies where the ark was placed is represented by the human Spirit. So, in the Holy of holiness, in those days, God dwelt in the ark of covenant. Only the priest could access it once a year and if it had to be transported, it must be carried by only the Levites on their shoulders.
As we read the Old Testament accounts, we see the several wonders the ark performed. The ark in those days’ way the earthly location of God. It was like a portal where humanity and divinity met. It was God’s dwelling place, his physical address on earth. The bible record that river Jordan stood still until the children of Israel and the priest had passed across it because of the ark, Other stories describe how the Israelites took the Ark with them into battle where the power of the ark helped the Israelites defeat their enemies. In one of such stories, when the philistines captured the ark and took it to the temple of their god dagon, the account said dagon eventually collapsed, it was broken apart before the ark of God, in fact there was also an outbreak of epidemic and diseases which eventually forced the philistines to return the Ark to Israel. We see other stories of how God struck those that attempted to touch the ark without following the protocol and we saw the blessings that came upon a man called Obed-Edom because he had the ARK kept in his house 2 Sam 6.11-15.
Saints, time and space would not permit me to explore the story of the Ark of God but I like to apply it as we can see from todays reading that God doesn’t dwell in houses made with hands, he dwells in us as his temple and as the ark within us we can approach the throne of grace, the mercy seat and find help by just reaching God in our Spirit. We also notice that God in us as the reality of the ark guarantees us victory in the battles of life therefore making us more than conquerors. Just as the ark could not be toyed with by the enemies of Israel, the bible says concerning you, touch not my anointed and do my prophet no harm, we therefore expect God’s intervention in time of trials and satanic attacks. The ark also brought blessings to the house of Obed-Edom, so are you a blessing in your home, in you family, business, office etc. You are the reality of the ark of God. You are Gods physical address, his dwelling place. You are covered with God which signifies glory, you are under the mercy seat of God and you have the commandments of God written on you heart, halleluiah, I am the ark of God.
