Life Capsule for Today                                                                                   16th March, 2025

Theme: Jesus the I AM (1)

Memory Verse: Heb 13:8

Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever.

Topic: Jesus as the bread of Life

Today’s Reading: Matt 25:13

Joh 6:31  Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.

Joh 6:32  Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.

Joh 6:33  For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.

Joh 6:34  Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.

Joh 6:35  And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

Words of the Ministry:

This week, we would spend some time on the I Am statements used by Jesus as metaphors in the book of John. A careful reader of the bible would trace the I Am statement to Exodus 3.14 where God introduced himself to Moses at the burning bush encounter. Jesus using same Phrase would further suggest he was deity. The seven I AM statements used by Jesus followed specific miracles and teaching, each unique and meant to drive home particular points. They show us that Jesus’ miracles were not just acts of power or mercy, but actions demonstrating the meaning of his ministry and teaching. As we explore them within the week, we would be seeing how Jesus is the very need of man at every stage of life and the reason for our living.

Jesus in this particular episode referred to himself as the bread of life (Jhn 6.35), his immediate audience desiring to eat bread as they did the previous day, Jesus shocked them by not only equating himself to God as the I Am statement meant he was deity, he went further by reminding them of a miracle God did for their fathers about 1300 years earlier which was to be commemorated at the Passover festival meal few days to when Jesus made the statement, comparing himself as the true bread to the one their fathers ate daily for 40 years in the wilderness, he said he was the true bread, the real food they needed that wouldn’t just meet their immediate need but satisfy them forever, this bread would not just sustain them but give them life eternally. His immediate audience never understood him, in fact they grumbled at his words and so is this generation even after 2000 years.

Jesus after 2000 years remains the bread of life that doesn’t just sustain you till the next day but gives you life eternal. The bread from God is not just food for the stomach but our spirit, soul and body, little wonder Jesus said man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that comes out of the mouth of God, the word here being Jesus the true and living bread (Jhn 1.1). Dear saints, we would all agree that the world is hungry, many in the church have also come to seek bread for their belly, an overview of our sermons and prayers today would suggest nothing but that we have become natural bread seeker, bread here could be degree, healing, marriage, job, money, sex, fame, power etc. Sooner than later, we come to realize that it only gives temporary satisfaction, we still feel empty and hungry after a temporary satisfaction. Why not cry to the Lord to satisfy your real hunger and thirst for him today as he promised, blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness for they shall be filled. Shalom!
