Theme: Biblical Giving (7)

Text: Prov 11:25

25 The generous soul will be made rich, And he who waters will also be watered himself. NKJV

Topic:  God is not a money doubler

Today’s Reading: 2 Cor 9:6-9

But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 7 So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work. 9 As it is written: “He has dispersed abroad, He has given to the poor; His righteousness endures forever.” NKJV

Words of the Ministry:

Today as we conclude our lesson on biblical giving, I like to comment on the idea of giving to God in order to get multiple folds from God which many call money doubling. A vast majority of Churches today cite scripture to motivate their members to give much more in the name of reaping multiples of 100, they give examples of Isaac, Solomon, Elisha and the widow etc, all of this is to work on the psyche of their member in order to defraud them. A careful look at the bible as we have been doing throughout the week states the contrary, while it is the exclusive right of God to give to persons as he wills, the motivation to give should ultimately be because we love God and not a promise of 100 folds, should such giving leads to a greater financial harvest, glory to God but the motive of our giving must not be because we are doing money doubling business with the God of the universe.

Many times because of the quest for money and material items, we seem to lose sight of the testimony God has for the Church, I like to cite an illustration, imagine a sister that finds it difficult to give to God and his work and who at the same time has been suffering from delayed promotion and conception, after listening to a particular sermon on the need to give to God and his work, she now made up her mind to give about 50% of her income to the work of God, within a month she got promoted and also took in. Now when such a person comes to give a testimony in the Church, the emphasis is always that she gave and God gave her promotion and she also conceived, others in Church including the preacher would celebrate this and some of the members would want to do the same for a 1-month miracle, unfortunately they may not have same testimony. The problem here is that the Church In this case has lost the testimony as the testimony for that sister is organic, it is that she should have learnt that stinginess and greed is wrong and that it is God that giveth promotion and all we need to live a good life. The lady should have from the experience seen the sin of her holding back and what God can do that her money can’t do rather that seeing an opportunity to do business with God.

We must be careful of covetousness, preachers and members alike, the central message of the cross is love, towards God and towards men. When we read the bible we see examples of persons that gave to God and didn’t become millionaires as many teach, the idea that we must always sow money is deceptive. Nothing replaces hard thinking and hard work. Regardless of how much you give, if you don’t work hard, think hard, improve on your human relations, avoid frivolous spending and pray hard, your giving may yield nothing. The widow that gave the widows mite (Luk 24.1-4), was recommended by Jesus that she gave the most but that didn’t make her a millionaire, in Mark 14.3, a certain woman anointed the Lord with  an alabaster jar of expensive perfume, made of pure nard. The account never reported she became a millionaire afterwards. Jesus told the rich young ruler to sell all he owned and follow him (Matt 19.16-22), the reward would have been the same as Peter and Paul, the Lord said those that left houses, land for his sake would receive a hundred fold on earth Mark 10.29-30. By this the Lord didn’t mean each person would have hundred fold lands, houses, children, mother or wives rather he meant once you are born again, the brethren in the church is your hundred fold brothers and sisters, their children are your children, their cars, land, houses the same etc. May God grant us light.
