Words of the Ministry

We have been considering the several reasons for celebrating the birth of the God-man Jesus Christ. We learnt in previous lessons that to fulfil the righteous requirement of God, God needed a man to die on behalf of mankind, that man needed to be sinless and righteous, he was also meant to be free from the curse of Adam. God made a promise of such a man in Genesis, the man was to be a seed of the woman, by this though he would have entered the earth like every other man, he would have been free from the sin of Adam as he would not be a product of the union of natural man. We saw the limitation of God without being born as man, we saw that of angels, natural man and animal. God still needed to save mankind hence the need to enter into humanity. We saw in yesterday’s lesson how the sacrificial death of Christ leads to the forgiveness of our several sins.

God’s goal was not to forgive us our sins but to deliver us from the power and dominion of sin in singular. Remember we learnt that man did not only commit sins but was sin because he ate of the tree of knowledge, that brought the devil into him, man became an embodiment of Satan. Like we saw in the Old Testament, several sacrifices were made on behalf of the Israelites but none could stop the power of sin as sin was a living personality ruling over the will of man. Man was therefore good for nothing but death. The only time the Adamic man stooped sinning was when he died. To terminate the root and power of sin, the bible says from today’s reading that Jesus came as the lamb of God to die taking our sin away but in his death, the account also said we died with him. It was a mutual death, the death of Christ was the death of our old man, the man of sin within us. Now we are free from the power and dominion of sin, now we can choose life.

Saints, can you personalize this statement Rom 6:14 “For sin shall not have dominion over ME, for you I am not under LAW but under GRACE”. You are no more under the law of sin and death, you have the power to choose Life and live righteously. Grace is God’s enabling ability to live right. We must never be bound by out past fears and experiences. The brutal death of Christ on the cross is not to only Forgive us but to liberate us from the power of SIN so that we can live righteously to God. We therefore celebrate Christmas because it is to commemorate the birth of the lamb of God that delivered mankind from the power of sin.
