20 And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous;

Words of the Ministry

Today’s bible character we would be considering is Lot. Lot was Abraham’s nephew, after some years of living with Abraham; he had reasons to relocate his family and business to Sodom and Gomorrah. Sodom and Gomorrah although looked prosperous was said to be a very wicked city full of all imaginable evil and immoral act. It was so bad that the account in Gen 18 and 19 said, God told Abraham his friend that he heard of the evil and had reasons to visit the earth to confirm. Knowing that our God is too holy to behold iniquity ( Isi 59.1, Hab 1.13 ), he sent his angels to visit the land of Sodom to confirm what he heard. On getting to Sodom, Lot welcomed them just as Abraham did, the account said he was sitting by the gate, that again showed he had no time for a regular social life with evil men of the city. On seeing them, he invited them to his house and prepared a meal just as Abraham did showing us that the righteous deeds  he learnt while with Abraham, he still practiced.

As we read chapter 19, we begin to see the confirmation of the evil as reported to God, although the land was green, flowing with milk and honey and good for commerce, the acts of the men of that land were evil, the inhabitants of Sodom did not fear God nor man. They were so evil that they practiced sodomy, both young and old delighted in immoral activities, these they were willing to do even to strangers forcefully, there was no law and order, the fear of God was missing and they taught their children to be the same but we noticed that despite this, Lot was not influenced, he kept to his righteous living, the bible even records that he had mature daughters who were still virgins in Sodom. Lot did not allow the evil of Sodom to enter his home; he was the only family that lived righteously in the whole city.

Dear saints, we notice that when the Angels led Lot and his family out of Sodom, his wife disobeyed God and looked back, that didn’t deter lot, he consistently obey God despite his loss and that preserved him and his daughters. Today, many saints in the name of searching for greener pastures have gone gotten jobs in Sodom, some have moved to foreign nations where sin is the order of the day but in bid to find favor and blend with the people, they have left their righteous convictions for money. They have followed the multitude to do evil. They don’t have the fear of God anymore, their language, dressing and social disposition has changed, they don’t see anything wrong with Sodom despite being Christians. Many that had a strong conviction have been influenced by family and friends. Dear saints, check your life, are you now a citizen of Sodom because of money, fame, power and a comfortable life, repent now before it’s too late, shalom.
