Words of the Ministry:
This week we would be looking at the theme ZOE which is the Divine, Uncreated, Eternal Life of God. We have severally learnt from our previous studies that the bible is a book of Life. As we study Zoe this week, we would be looking at the various kinds of life in man and the major difference the Life of God brings. We would see from scriptures the eternal plan of God to be life to man as Gen 3 suggests with the tree of life. By being life to man, man would have progressed from being a mankind to a Godkind i.e our source would have been God himself just as we see in Jhn 1.12-13.
You are probably aware that three Greek words are translated life in the New Testament. Bios denotes the life of our physical body (Luke 8:14, like the parable of seed that fell among thorns); psuche, the soul or the soulish life (Matthew 16:25 like whoever wants to save his life shall lose it); and zoe, the uncreated, eternal life, which we did not have until we received the Lord Jesus. The zoe life is in our spirit. The presence of these three kinds of life within us makes us complicated and is the source of conflicts. Bios may feel tired, but psuche may want to listen to a previously known worldly song. Each expects the other to go along with its feeling. Zoe proposes that they cease their disagreement and go to the fellowship instead; then bios will rest, and psuche will have satisfaction, not with worldly music but hymns and soul lifting worship while Zoe in our Spirit find further expression and our spirit is satisfied.
This week , I would spend most of my time in the book of John as it encapsulates the thought I intend to share. From Genesis we notice God created man a vessel, placed him before two trees, the tree of Life and the tree of the Knowledge of Good and evil (Gen 2.9-10). The tree of Life was a type of Christ as we later see it the gospels (Jhn 15.5, Jhn 1.4). So the fall of man led to his death as he became naked and separated from God and eventually died physically so we see Jesus in Jhn 10.10 saying he came to give us life and life in abundance. The life here as used in the Greek is ZOE, so What is life, how is it received, what difference does it bring and how do we explore the riches in this life to maximize all its possibilities?
