Theme: RAHAB: A story of divine transformation (6)

Memory Verse: Rom 8:29

29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. NKJV

Topic: Rahab and her household accepted the gospel

Today’s Reading: Josh 6:23-25

23 And the young men who had been spies went in and brought out Rahab, her father, her mother, her brothers, and all that she had. So they brought out all her relatives and left them outside the camp of Israel. 24 But they burned the city and all that was in it with fire. Only the silver and gold, and the vessels of bronze and iron, they put into the treasury of the house of the Lord. 25 And Joshua spared Rahab the harlot, her father’s household, and all that she had. So she dwells in Israel to this day, because she hid the messengers whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.

NKJV

Words of the Ministry:

Saints today we come to another aspect of rehab’s life. We have learnt about her act of faith and how she protected the Israelite spies from the soldiers in Jericho. We saw her heart towards her loved ones and how she religiously kept to her saving faith by tying a scarlet thread by her window as she was instructed. We see the radical change she must have adjusted to from the day she realized Jericho was to fall. Today we want to have a glimpse of her life outside old Jericho, how she lived her life after she escaped destruction in Jericho. Our today’s reading said she and her household was spared and she lived among the Israelites from then and was a partaker of the Jewish inheritance because she believed their message and worshipped their God.

Saints the matter before us is a matter we can relate with. Just like many unbelievers that got saved and became part of the household of Israel, so did Rahab and I like us to imagine how life would have been with Rahab especially in her early years among the Isrealites. By virtue of the war she must have lost some other family members, friend and acquaintances. Because she previously engaged in an immoral trade she must have lost those connections and the monetary benefits. Not only that, there would have been natural human desires which she lived by before then that she had to stop because Jericho her former country has been invaded by another nation with strict laws, so strict that an immoral act would lead to death. I can imagine even some Israelites mocking her saying what an immoral woman, could she really be on our side, could she sell out to neighboring nations in future, some could even blame Joshua for trusting her. I can imagine she asking guidance from one of the men and the wife of such individual becoming so furious suspecting she intends to flirt with her partner.

Rahab, a woman that was in favor with the soldiers and the king now had to learn and unlearn before mere men, she had to bow to persons she would in the past not even relate with. Rahab had to suffer a lot for being with the Israelites, not only her but her parents and siblings too., I can imagine the family members coming to complain that their previously owned farm or land had been taken away by an Israelite. Rahab had to learn the laws and ordinances in humility, she taught same to her family, she didn’t attempt to run away to betray the Israelites. Despite the stigma of her name, she served God faithfully and made the unique list of the heroes of faith.

Saints that is the story of many of us and we must also learn from Rahab, the new life is not an improved life, it is the life of Christ and in this new kingdom of light, things are done differently from the kingdom of darkness where we previously belonged. Our walk with God would cost us pain and shame atimes, even some of the brethren would betray us and call us all manner of names, we may be disappointed by the amount of pain involved but we must keep looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith. Rahab did not only save herself but also her family. Our salvation is not complete if our household is not saved. We must like Cornelius see to it that our household is also saved, we must be able to say as for me and my household, we would serve the lord. May the Lord grant us light.
