Words of the Ministry:
This week I would be considering the account of a prominent old testament character called Elijah. He lived in the old testament but his ministry resonates in the new testament and beyond as even this generation talks severally about the ministry of Elijah, the power he manifested, how he was a terror to the kingdom of darkness and the intimacy he enjoyed to the point of being able to control the seasons. Elijah was indeed a unique character firstly because he served the only true God and secondly because he understood the power of prayer. From the account of Elijah, we see a man whose work was not done by prayer but was prayer. He made an effective impact during his earthly ministry because he knew the single most important thing in ministry called intimacy with God.
As we study the prayer life of this great prophet, we see the power of prayer. One of the first things we noticed about Elijah was his first mention in the bible was when he brought a message form the Lord, it reads 1 Kings 17:1 “And Elijah the Tishbite, of the inhabitants of Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the Lord God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, except at my word.”. Immediately we notice that the first introduction of this great prophet to Elijah was that he stands before God, he stays in God’s presence, he had an information from the invisible God of the universe, he was like a portal, a channel between heaven and earth. We didn’t notice an introduction concerning his parents, marriage, financial status or any other achievement. What was most important to Elijah was that he was with the God, that he was willing to make known.
As we read the account in 1Kings 17 and compare it to James 5.17-18, we would realize that Elijah didn’t just come to inform Ahab about what God wanted to do, rather, Elijah coporated with God through intense prayer and then it became an agenda worthy of proclamation with authority before Israel. Here we see great contrast between the approach of Elijah and ours as we declare a thing and expect God to do it but Elijah effected it after picking it in the Spirit, got approval and then declared it before men, little wonder he had many successes. Elijah knew the mind of God and it takes someone with the same mind to know it before even praying it. The bible says God’s will is what is done on earth and not man’s will and for the drought to be done on earth, it must have been God’s will, that again shows us the level of intimacy Elijah had with the spirit of God as the bible teaches the Holy Spirit searches the deep things of God and reveals it to us. Join us within the week as we explore the prayer life of this great man of prayer.
