Words of the Ministry:
Amen, yesterday we started a study on the atonement, we learnt that God being a loving and holy God had to deal with man’s sin. The bible says God cannot behold iniquity and the fallen man cannot live without sinning, we see from the first man Adam, the matter of sin was a barrier between God and man, our sin limited us from having fellowship with God, God ‘s love on the other hand kept us dear to his heart, but being a righteous and holy God, he needed to deal with sin. The bible is clear on the matter of sin, the soul that sinneth shall die Eze18. 20.. so, every soul was subject to death, but God made a provision in the garden of Eden which was foreshadowed in the old covenant and was fulfilled in the new, the provision was the provision of blood for the atonement of the soul.
From our memory verse, the life of the flesh is in the blood, in other words whenever blood is shed a life has been taken, so for God judgment to pass over us he needed to see blood and hence we are the object of his love, some other being or animal needed to pay for it, hence the need for animal blood. The power in the blood cannot be overemphasized even in the old testament before the ultimate price Jesus paid, animal sacrifices blood could cover the sin of man but not necessarily blot it out, that enables man temporary have fellowship with God for a season. In Ex 12.13, God speaking to the Israelites in Egypt says when I see the blood, I would pass over, here referring to the blood put on their lintel to evade the angel of death.
From the account of Abel, who was killed by his brother, we realize that the blood speaks (Gen 4.10, Heb 12.24). While the blood of Abel demanded Justice, the blood of Jesus speaks mercy. The shed blood was and is a necessity to relating with God. Under the old covenant, the fallen man needed the blood to have access to God and under the new covenant, we still approach God under the sacrificial work of Jesus shed blood. God justice system required blood and without the shedding of blood there was no remission of sin Heb 9.22. As we look at the old testament pattern of the atonement tomorrow, we would be seeing in greater details how man cannot enjoy God’s relationship without the shedding of blood, we would also be seeing a foreshadow of the blood of Jesus Christ.
