Words of the Ministry:

As a follow up on yesterday’s lesson, I like emphasize on the matter of home training. As we introduced yesterday, everything is traceable to the home be it good or bad and when it comes to child upbringing and spouse influencing. Little could be achieved by telling or instructing with words as what makes impact is not what is said but the life we live. When the bible says we should train up a child the way he should go, it is saying we should do more than tell them rather we should be an example to them by creating a mental picture of such lessons by indeed proving that it is possible to live the life. The task before the parents is therefore more than guiding the coming generation with words but showing the way by being an example.

A typical example is saying thank you in the presence of our children to our spouses after every act of kindness. It is refraining ourselves from anger and maintaining our calm when a neighbor or stranger offends us. It is responding kindly to an aggressive driver at the opposite lane when in traffic, it is negotiating considerably with a street hawker when buying items, it is being calm and following the queue in in a public place like a filling station or bank. The idea is beyond we doing such things privately, we must also ensure situation warrants us to do it publicly before our children so that they may learn from it. That should even precede teaching as such acts would prompt questions that would make it easier to teach. Same applies to our spouses, we must continually be an example of honor, humility, kindness and sacrifices even when it seems the other party never acknowledges it. We should see our act as a mission with the goal of being a living example.

Dear saints, many fail because a lot of emphasis is placed on teaching rather than training. In some cases, we as parents and spouses never show a practical example of what we are teaching when occasion demands. As we battle to keep our homes, we must realize that it takes a lot of time and sacrifice and except we live what we say, we would not make much impact. We hear people say that the children of preachers are worse behaved in some cases and the preachers respond by saying they tried their best teaching them the word of God. What many of them don’t do is being an example of such teachings, like we said, training is doing to  teach not just teaching with words and never doings. In Act 1:1, the bible says “The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,” we see Jesus doing before teaching. A typical example of such is an apprentice to a motor mechanic, he sees what the trainer does before he is even told. May the Lord grant us light.
