Words of the Ministry

This week, we would be considering the subject of financial prosperity and stewardship.  We intend to look at the bible view on prosperity, God as the ultimate source of our wealth, our duty towards financial abundance and how we are to remain accountable to God even with our finances. The subject of financial prosperity has led to several debates, while some in a bid to discourage materialism end up preaching poverty as an indicator of godliness, while financial abundance in itself is not a yard stick to measure how pleasing our walk is with God, it is also wrong to assume that because a man is broke and he is a Christian, he is automatically living right. In the course of our sharing, we would be considering God’s role and man’s role in financial abundance but first off the burden for today would be to buttress it is God’s intention that we prosper financially.

Our text says God that didn’t spare us his son, he used him as the ultimate sacrifice for mankind, how much more would such a God deny us of less valuable things like silver and gold (emphasis is mine), when we look through scriptures, we discover that poverty and lack in many occasions especially in the old testament was a way of passing a message of God’s displeasure to the Children of Israel. Even with our first parents Adam and Eve, when the Lord visited them after the fall, he cursed the earth for their sake (Gen 3.17), that led to a life of toiling and struggling for mankind.  In the Old Testament, men that God called, among several things he promises them financial prosperity in horses, cattle’s, silver, gold, donkey etc. we see such examples like Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, David, Solomon, Joshua etc. the bible is full of scriptures that talk about financial prosperity, Jesus gave us 38 parables; 16 deal with how to manage your possessions. There are 500 verses in the New Testament dealing with prayer, and less than 500 discussing faith. There are more than 2,000 verses telling us how to manage our possessions in order to produce prosperity in our lives. In 3Jhn 2, the apostle said a prayer “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth” We see from all of the above that its God intention to make us prosper financially.

Another school of thought resist financial prosperity for believers, they say Jesus condemned it with the parable of the rich young ruler, saying it’s easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for the rich to make eternal life(Matt 19.24), what they fail to understand is that the rich young ruler placed his confidence in his riches, to him it was an idol and that still hold today, they also don’t read further where the bible says those that has lost family and material possession would get a hundred fold and eternal life  (Mat 19.29).  In the course of the week, we would be looking in many details concerning stewardship. The bible taught that certain disciples of Jesus were rich and pleasing to him, for instance, we see Joseph of Arimathea ((Matt 27.57, Mrk 15.43, Lk 20.50-56), we see Dorcas (Act 9.39-40) and in 1 Thimothy  says 17 Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment´, to show that there were rich individuals in the Church. We must note that its God that give power to make good success (Deut. 8.18), the devil has his counterfeit but that is not to rule out God’s ability to bless his children, if he didn’t spare his son, he won’t spare us silver and gold.
