Theme: Understanding grace  (6)

Text: John 1:17

17 For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. NKJV

Topic: Grace: Frustrating the Grace of God

Today’s Reading: Gal 2:19-21

19 For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God.20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. 21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain. KJV

Words of the Ministry:

The matter before us today is that of frustrating the grace of God, a vast majority of believers today frustrate the grace of God in two major ways, first is establishing their own righteousness outside Christ or going back to the law while the second way is living a careless and carefree life. We must remember that we said Grace is not just God’s riches towards us but a living reality of Christ, Grace is Christ himself coming into us to enable us live for God. Paul here began to caution the Galatian Church over their attitude of frustrating the grace of God, as powerful as grace is, it requires our corporation to fulfil its mandate as God does not overrule our will to force his ways on us.

As used above, the word “frustrate” means to nullify, invalidate, or defeat the purpose of God’s grace. It implies doing something that makes God’s grace essentially useless in our lives. What is most concerning about this statement is the truth that we can frustrate God’s grace. We can make it to be ineffective. When we uphold our own righteousness and the works of the law without appreciating the grace of God, we are frustrating the grace of God.  We must remember as salvation and righteousness is by grace, it’s not based on how good or bad we have been. Grace is actually meant to enable the stubborn sinner obey God once he receives the life of Christ.

When we deliberately sin overlooking God grace, it can also be said that we are frustrating the grace of God. Paul said in Rom 6:1-3 “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?” As believers we must acknowledge the person of Grace within us and do not grief him. The Holy Spirit is the expression and reality of Grace in us, he guides and protect us. May God grant us light.
