Theme: Beware of Covetousness (7)

Memory Verse:Luk 12:15  And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

Topic: How to overcome covetousness

Today’s Reading:

2Ti 2:19 -21  Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.

20  But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour.

21  If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.

Jas 1:22 -23 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

23  For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:

24  For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.

25  But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

Words of the Ministry:

Today we come to the conclusion of the theme “Beware of Covetousness”, I like us to look at God’s own prescription towards solving the problem. We have seen from the week’s lesson that covetousness is a sin related to the flesh as it is one of the works of the flesh. To address covetousness therefore, one must deal with it like any other work of the flesh. We must apply the cross by denying ourselves those things that we badly crave for. From todays reading, we can see that any man that wants to be a vessel unto honor must purge himself, that means that under the light of the word,  we must tell ourselves the truth of who we really are, that false air of arrogance and sense of importance we have must be deflated, we must hate our greed and call greed.

The second thing we must do is in the second passage in today’s reading, we must replace our wrongful opinions about ourselves and life with the word of God with the intention of doing God’s will. We must do this deliberately to renew our mind. As we see in scriptures, example of covetous men and the example of our Lord, his living, lessons and death, we must be willing to accept rebuke and adjust so as not to be like a man that forgets his natural face and what he needs to do to be more like Christ. By so doing, we gain the blessing which is the Holy Spirit. May the Lord grant us Light.
