Today’s Reading: 2Sa 11:3-5
3 And David sent and enquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?
4 And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness: and she returned unto her house.
5 And the woman conceived, and sent and told David, and said, I am with child.
Words of the Ministry:
Yesterday we saw a general definition of covetousness, I like us to look at an example of covetous acts in the bible to further define covetousness in bible terms, today’s example is from the old testament, the account of David and Beersheba in 2 Sam 11. As we read the account of David, we see a man who God has blessed, he became King and inherited his predecessor’s wives, he was very powerful with much gold and silver, he had the right to marry as many women as he wanted but his inordinate greed led him to covet the wife of one of his soldiers, lust in the forefront followed by covetousness which then led to adultery and eventually led to murder.
From the account of David, we see how covetousness could reduce a man of honor and stature. It wasn’t that David wasn’t married and neither was Uriah’s wife the only woman, covetousness beclouded David’s reasoning till he shot himself on the foot, the baby the relationship brought eventually died as a result of God’s judgement, not only that, his children committed an immoral act that led to the death of two of his children, his son also went into his wives thereby committing an abomination in Israel all because of David’s covetousness.
From this account, see that covetousness or greed is always accompanied by several other works of flesh (Gal 5.19-21). We see lust, adultery, theft, murder, lies, blackmail, slander, rebellion, division etc as co-workers with covetousness. We wrongly label covetousness with other titles like adultery while not realizing that the root cause is covetousness. This evil shows up in our day to day activities and we must be deliberate to stop it. When you realize that you find it difficult to rejoice with others when they have a testimony, when you think God hates you not because you are in need but because he blessed another individual, when you see yourself as being better than all and deserving the best. When you go to a party and you want all the food and drink to yourself, when you become sad when others testify, when you always prefer what others have to yours, comparing your success, wife, children etc with others, you are a covetous person, Saints check within, your sudden increase in prayer, giving and fellowship time etc, is it as a result of true love for God or an inordinate greed for earthly riches. May the Lord grant us light.
