Life Capsule for Today 6th August, 2023
Theme: Beware of Coveteousness (1)
Memory Verse: Luk 12:15 And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.
Topic: What is covetousness
Today’s Reading: Jas 4:1-4
1 From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?
2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.
3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.
4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
Words of the Ministry:
This week we would be considering the matter of covetousness. Covetousness “is an insatiable desire for worldly gain.” Covetousness is an insatiable desire to find fulfillment, meaning and purpose in things, instead of in God. The spirit of covetousness leads to and is the mother of many other sins. When we read scriptures like 1 Thim 6.10, we must see the love of money as used here to mean greed, choosing money above all things. As we look around us today, covetousness or greed is the root cause of many evils. Many people are not satisfied with what they have to the extent of stealing, killing, blackmailing, committing immorality, telling lies and worshipping the devil.
A vast majority of prayers made by the saints today is propelled by greed, the insatiable desire to always want more, be the best and control others is the work of the flesh and we must crucify it to live a victorious life. From Today’s reading, we see the reason for many unanswered prayers, the matter of greed has been a major reason why we pray and never get answers. When we juxtapose Mat 7.7 and Jam 4.3, we see that God is only obliged to answer our request when it is his will (1 Jhn 5.14). It is therefore important that the believer overcomes the promptings of covetousness to have a healthy prayer life.
How then does a believer know when he is out of God’s limit, how does he stop greed and how does a believer know exactly what to pray for to avoid unanswered prayers? This and many more would be considered within the week. Please share the devotional to family and friends and don’t forget our weekly meetings.
