Topic: Church at Laodicea (The Lukewarm Church)
Bible Reading: Rev 3.14-18
14 And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;
15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.
16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.
17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:
18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.
Words of the Ministry
The Church in Laodicea was the 7th of the seven Churches the Lord wrote to (Rev 3.14-21). The Lord described the Church as being neither cold nor hot, as a lukewarm Church he said he would spew them out of his mouth. Here we see a Church that wants to put one leg in the Lord and the other in the world. This they do to appear rich, increase in goods and to meet their needs (vs 16). While such Churches could deceive themselves and the world around them, the Lord knew their true condition. The Lord is the faithful witness (v14), describing their condition, he said they are wretched, miserable, poor, blind and naked, What a condition.
The Church in Laodicea has put everything in place humanly, they have good buildings, good music, an organized service, a wide reach , physical presence globally, high power connection and a name in the society, that’s why they see themselves as being rich, increased in goods and in need of nothing including God. Most of such Churches can embark on projects without God, they can hold yearly programmes without praying, they make the Church comfortable for sinners just because they need the numbers, what a shame. The Lord says that material wealth you have only indicates you are wretched as Christ is our true riches, he said they have a superficial joy but they are miserable as only Christ produces the fruit of the Spirit called Joy. They can’t see their real condition as they have made the opinion of the world their standard, they are naked because they are unrighteous as Christ is our righteousness. Saints isn’t it funny how much we can do without Christ for several years in the Church only for him to say I never knew you?
The counsel of the Lord to you today is buy from him gold tried in fire, the true riches of Christ comes with a price, denying the flesh, taking up the cross and following him. Put on white garment of righteousness to be clothed and to put away your shame. Many are dressed like Adam, putting on leaves, it would dry out with time. Put on Christ as your subjective righteousness so you won’t be ashamed when he comes calling. Anoint your eyes with eyesalve so you can see your true condition, don’t fall for reputation among unbelievers, anoint your eyes with the truth of God’s word to see you need help.
In conclusion, the Lord said he stands at the door and knocks, isn’t that imagery scary, the Lord we have come to worship or we believe we are worshipping says he stands outside the Church, he is not there, he doesn’t believe in manmade religion, he doesn’t want hypocrisy, he is calling for individuals that would stand out and stand with him, he wants to feast with them. Are you ready? May the Lord grant us light.
