Theme: To what Church do you belong (6)?

Memory Verse: Eph 5:27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

Topic: Church at Philadelphia (The Church with brotherly love)

Text: Rev 3:7-10

7 And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth;

8  I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.

9  Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee.

10  Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.

Words of the Ministry

Today we come to the Church in Philadelphia normally referred to as the Church with brotherly love, it is the second of the two Churches out of seven that never got a rebuke. The first was the Church at Smyrna, the suffering Church (Rev 2) and now the Church in Philadelphia (Rev 3.7-12). The Lord said he knows their works as they have kept his name. They did not take upon them any other name or blaspheme his name rather they kept his name. When the Lord taught his disciples to pray, he thought them to hallow God’s name, that is to honor his name just like a woman takes the name of her husband, as we are the bride of Christ we are to hallow his name.

To hallow is name is not just to live in a manner that honors him but to avoid taking another name, can you imagine a married woman taking another man’s name. Today, we see churches not satisfied with the name of the Lord, they want to take another name, they want to be identified to be something beyond the Church, the bride of Christ. They become an organization instead of an organism, they become independent instead of depending on the Lord, they have denied his name, they have gone the way of Demas because they love the world, to bear his name is to bear his mark, the mark of brotherly love.

In the 8th verse the Lord said he has set before them an open door which no man can shut because they have kept his word and have not denied his name. We again see that the open door many seek and struggle for comes naturally from the Lord when we keep his word by obeying him and keeping his name, identifying and remaining in the pure Church life. Many that are not Jews have come into the fold to distract the sheep but the lord said he would make them pay. The false preachers and brethren that have found their way into the fold to discourage the saints would soon meet their Judgement.

The Lord, unlike other Churches as a reward promised the Church in Philadelphia something quite unique, he said to the overcomers, he won’t give them something but make them a pillar in the house of his God and write the name of his God’s city and his new name. Saints what the lord gives us is nothing compared to what he makes us. The Lord promised to make them a pillar in the house of his God. What a great thing to be among the ones that never leave the house of God, living in his presence, to be identified with God and to be his expression. May the Lord grant us light.
