Theme: The several Titles of Jesus (6)

Topic: The Good Shepherd

Memory Verse:     John 6:35

And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.  NKJV

Today’s Reading: John 10:10-18

10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. 11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.  12 But a hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them.  13 The hireling flees because he is a hireling and does not care about the sheep.  14 I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own.  15 As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep.  16 And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd. 17 “Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again.  18 No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father.” NKJV

Words of the Ministry

Today we see another Title of Jesus, as the good shepherd. The title is one of the titles that suggests Jesus shepherding to see to the organic growth of the saints. Just as a shepherd does, the Lord as shepherd sees to our entire wellbeing from Spirit, to our soul and even our bodies. The bible shows the shepherd with his saints meeting both their physical needs and their spiritual needs. For instance, we saw the Lord healing Peter’s mother in-law, we also saw him making financial provision to settle taxes for both himself and Peter, Many times we see the Lord nurturing the disciples with the word and when he was to be captured at gethsemane, he came forward saying he was the one they wanted. He promised his disciples never to leave them nor forsake them till the end of the age, infact the good shepherd as the spirit continues his work both within and upon the saints.

Isaiah speaking about his many sacrifices said in Isa 53:4-5 “4 Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.  NKJV. The Lord Jesus went through all these for the saints and all who believe. As the good Shepherd he paid the ultimate price of dying for his sheep to give them his life. Today’s reading compares Jesus to a hireling. Jesus said he came to give not just food and protection but eternal life to his saints, the life of God that is the great need of the sheep. The verse says the devil has come to kill steal and destroy, to undo all of these, the Lord gives his sheep eternal life. This eternal life takes care of whatever the devil has stolen both physical and spiritual, whatever he has killed and whatever he intends to destroy, Amen.
