Words of the Ministry:

Yesterday we began a study on the theme vessels of glory and we said man who was created in Gen 1.26-27 was in the image of God but was not yet in his likeness as the needed element to be in his likeness was the tree of life which he was supposed to eat. The bible teaches that God made a decision to make man in his image and likeness in Gen 1.26, but verse 27 says he created man in his image and never mentioned his likeness. A careful reader would notice two things immediately. 1. God created but did not make and 2, man was in the image of God and not in his likeness yet even till he fell.

Today I like to take a closer look at Adam to understand why we say he was in the image of God and not in his likeness and secondly to see why he became naked in the actual sense despite being created naked. We stated yesterday that not much was said about Adam before his fall but we would use other parts of scripture to understand the event in the garden of Eden. The term image refers to something internal. God made man in his image because God is a Spirit, he made man a Spirit (Gen 4.24, 1 Thess 5.23). The second stage would have been to make man into his likeness, something external, to make is different from to create because to create is to create something from nothing while to make is to add two elements together or make something from a pre-existing substance, for instance, God created the earth and from the earth men make clay pots and such pots are made by adding clay and water which are two elements. So the created man who was created as a Spirit needed to have an additional element which is Christ to be like God or in the likeness of God.

The bible teaches that the spirit of man is the candle of God (Pro.20.27), and Christ is the light of the world (Jhn 8.12), the express image of the invisible God (Col 1.15). Adam and Eve were expected to eat the tree of life which represented Christ in the garden (Jhn 15.5 + Jhn 1.4). By eating the tree, God would have entered into the Spirit of man through regeneration making man in his likeness, the addition of the tree of life would have been a fulfilment of Gen 1.26. Man would have been an express image and likeness of the invisible God, being one with him in life and nature but not in the Godhead, but we give glory to God because his purpose would be achieved in eternity future as man becomes his image and likeness through the redemptive work of Christ (Rev 4.3, Rev 21.11).

We also stressed that man became naked lacking the shekinah of God after his fall.  We saw that man was created naked but never knew he was (Gen. 2.25) because he was covered until he ate of the tree of knowledge because something left Adam and Eve, the thing that kept them from noticing their nakedness before God, the same element made it possible for them to stand before God. That is the Shekinah of God, it is the glory of God presence that rubs off on man and its meant to be a part of man as we fellowship with God. To have a proper understanding of this we would need to refer to Moses (Ex0 34.29-33), he was shining after having a few days’ encounter with God, same with Jesus on the mount of transfiguration, he revealing who he really was (Mat 17. 1-5), he was radiating the shekinah of God that covered him because he was in God presence, again we see the account of Jesus resurrection (Jhn 20.6-7, 16-17), we would notice that the burial clothes of Jesus were in the tomb but when Mary saw him, he was not naked because he was covered with the shekinah glory of God. That was what Adam lost and became truly naked. May God grant us light, join us tomorrow as we proceed in our study.
