Theme: The several Titles of Jesus (5)

Topic: Immanuel (God is with Us)

Memory Verse:    John 6:35

And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.  NKJV

Today’s Reading: Matt 1:21-25

21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” 22 So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: 23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.” 24 Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, 25 and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name Jesus. NKJV

Words of the Ministry

Today we look at another title of Jesus which is Immanuel. The prophecy of Isaiah which was later confirmed by angel and fulfilled by Jesus sates that a virgin shall conceive and his name shall be called Immanuel which meant God is with Us (Isis 7.14). As we read through the gospels, we almost don’t see any time the Lord is called Immanuel rather we see where he is severally referred to as Jesus which originally in the Hebrew is Yeshua meaning Jehovah Saves. Jesus was said to be called Jesus because as Yeshua he saves his people from their sin. From today’s reading, we see the angel Gabriel telling Joseph the child would be called Immanuel but his name would be Jesus. By this we can see that Immanuel was who he was while the name Jesus was what he did. So on the one hand he is God with us as Immanuel saving his people from their sins as Jesus. So God has come to be with us and to save us from our sin, amen.

John 1. 14 states that he Jesus is the word made flesh and the word is God. This may be one of the clearest references of Jesus as Immanuel. Again we see Jesus referring to himself as God in John 14.9 stating that if the disciples have seen him, they have seen the father. Apostle Paul was one of the apostles who referenced Jesus as God with us, for instance in Philippians 2.6 and Colossians 1.15, Jesus is said to be the very nature and image of the invisible God. We can see from the two names, Jesus and Immanuel the earthly ministry of Jesus and the actual reason for the incarnation was to satisfy both the judicial and organic aspects of salvation. On the one hand he is Jesus because he came to save his people from their sin and on the other hand he is Immanuel as God with us who is actually in us as the Holy Spirit to live out the life of God in us. Dear saints, what a glorious testimony that God as Immanuel lives in us to fulfil the age long desire of image and likeness (Gen 1.26), Amen.
