Theme: Peacemakers (3)

Topic: A word of Comfort

Memory Verse for the week: Mat 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

Today’s Reading: Luk 18:6-7

6 And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge saith.

7  And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them?

Rom 12:19-20

19  Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

20  Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.

Words of the Ministry

Yesterday, I emphasized that in living peacefully we must ensure we don’t avenge ourselves as vengeance belongs to God. We saw from the scriptures, the constraints of the Holy Spirit and how we should ensure we don’t give evil for evil but good for evil as our weapons of warfare are not carnal. The question then is, what happens, are we meant to be the sorrowful one being pushed from pillar to post with no help in view, is our lot to be at the mercy of trouble and mischief makers who derive Joy in hurting us? The answer to these is what I would like to address today.

The first reading is the concluding part of a parable Jesus gave concerning a widow who sought vengeance from a Judge who neither feared God nor men but at the end of the day because of the importunity of the widow, the judge got her the desired justice and the Jesus concluded by saying if the evil Judge could do that, how much more would God avenge his elect even if he bears long and the second reading is the concluding part of yesterday’s reading, here we see the apostle saying as we give good for evil we are giving room for God to avenge us as our act of good is as though we are heaping a coal of fire on our human enemies.

Drawing from both passages, we can see that God cares about his elect, the bible calls us his anointed that mustn’t be touched ( Psa 105.15) and we are as the apple of his eyes (Zech 2.8). We are members of his body and his temple and whosoever destroys the temple God says he would destroy (1 Cor 3.16-17). These verses and many more prove that God indeed cares about our situation, our challenges, the many trials we face and our persecution and he is ready to avenge us. What we need to do is like the widow in Luke 18, persist on prayers, ask God to avenge us, hold him by his word as he has promised vengeance is his. By so doing we would be living peacefully with our adversary while God effects a coal of fire on them.

In Luke 18.7, Jesus says God may tarry but he would definitely avenge us. We must not be discouraged by our waiting time, it’s all for our good as the bible in Jas 1:2-4  says,  My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; 3  Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. 4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. So we again see that even our many trials and afflictions is working for our good, may the Lord grant us Light.
