Today’s Reading: Eph 2:8-11

8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.11 Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands; KJV

Words of the Ministry:

This week we intend to look at the subject of grace. We trust God that through this week’s lesson we would have a proper view on the biblical teaching of grace. Grace which is a foundational matter of our Christian faith has been twisted by many to suggest lascivious living and carnality, a number of believers see grace as excuse for sinful living not knowing what it entails. We therefore want to consider grace as it relates to our Christian living.

Many see grace as the opposite of the law, they say they are now under grace and are not bound by the ten commandments. What they do not realize is that not being bound by the law is to live beyond the demands of the law. As we look at the lord Jesus Christ and his apostles, we see that they enjoyed grace and were not bound by the law of Moses but the new law of love which superseded the law of Moses and had higher demands than that of Moses. For instance, to commit adultery, one had to physically commit the act but under the new law of Jesus Christ, a lustful thought is same as committing adultery. We would have therefore noticed that the apostles lived a life beyond the commandment and no one in the old covenant could live a life pleasing to God like them.

What then is grace? The Greek word translated grace in the New Testament is Charis. Strong’s definition of grace says that it is “especially the divine influence upon the heart, and its reflection in the life. Grace is more than an abstract legal transaction that is recorded somewhere in heaven. Grace is the influence of the Holy Spirit that works a change in the person from the inside out. Grace is God’s supernatural ability in man that enables man to live a life pleasing to God. Grace is a person, the man Jesus Christ (Tit 2.11), it is the enabling power of God that works out and lives out the God life in man. As we look at the demands of God, we come to realize that no man can please God of himself except he or she has the grace of God but this grace in the new covenant is not something outside man, it is the living reality of God and his enabling influence on man.

Join us this week as we investigate the matter of biblical grace, its purpose, how to maximize it, how many frustrate it and what we can achieve with it.
