Theme: Why Tongues (4)
Memory Verse: Mark 16.17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
Today’s Topic: To bring a message to the Church
Today’s Reading: 1Co 14:5
5 I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.
1Co 14:27-28
27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.
28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.
Words of the Ministry:
Today we would be contrasting the public use ands private use of tongues. As we have learnt, tongues serve both public and private use. For the private use of tongues, we said it is a prayer language to enhance our communication directly with God as no one understands what is being said. We also saw that the gift of tongues builds our faith as we pray the mind of God in the Spirit. For the public use, we said it may be a human language spoken by an unlearned to a native speaker of that language through the power of the Holy Spirit as we saw in Acts 2.6 or could also serve as a means to communicating a message from God to the Church in which case the tongue needs to be interpreted either by same person or another person with the gift of interpretation of tongues. When this scenario occurs, we say it is equal to prophecy (1 Cor 14.5,13).
The public use of tongues was highly encouraged by the Apostle Paul as it serves as a means of building up not just the individual speaking in tongues as the private use does but the Church as a whole. By combining the gift of tongues with the gift of interpretation of tongues, God communicates a message of prophecy to the Church as that on the other hand brings edification, exhortation and comfort (1 Cor 14.3). The public use of tongues to send a message to the Church is unique in the sense that such tongue has same meaning to persons with the gift of interpretation of tongues and they all would all interpret it to mean the same thing, that was why Paul said the message must be confirmed and interpreted and if there is no interpreter, no need for such public use of tongues as the goal of edifying the Church is defeated.
This is not the same thing as praying in tongues in the Church. When we pray in tongues in Church although we are in a public place, we are still engaging in a private use of tongues as we are not relating any message to the Church rather, we are communicating directly to God and building up our faith. That is why we must pray privately in tongues responsibly not to distract others and so that others would not assume we have a message for the church thereby causing a confusion. From what we have learnt, we can see that both the private and public use of tongue must be encouraged and practiced just as the saints need to pray to have the gift of interpretation of tongue to build the Church and edify the body. May the Lord grant us light.
