Topic:  Restitution Under the New Covenant (C)

Today’s Reading: Rom 12:18-19

18 If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. 19 Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. NKJV

Words of the Ministry:

Today we continue with two more examples of restitution in the new covenant. We have considered some examples of how the saints dealt with improper objects and idols, their neighbors, issues of debt and murder, what we noticed consistent to all was the working of the Holy Spirit which made them restitute beyond the law where necessary and possible, we also noticed that neither Jesus nor the apostles overburdened the heart of the new converts on matters relating to their past except where the Holy Spirit convicts the heart of the saint. We concluded that while restitution is a new covenant practice, it wasn’t a determinant of one’s salvation rather it was to have a clear conscience before men and to help our testimony and ministry. Today I like to consider restitution concerning some unsettled matter in our past and the issue of polygamy.

  1. Dealing with unsettled matters: Matt 8.21-22, here we see an example of a man wanting to do the burial of his father. Actually, this is not an ordinary burial but such as we call reburial, a man that has died after some time would be celebrated again. Jesus said those that are spiritually dead should do that. The implication of this is that many of us want to settle all matters before following the Lord, many people want to settle all of their past affairs before they believe in the Lord. If so, they will have no opportunity to believe in Him. We should not be bound by matters of the dead. Instead, we should just regard the unsettled matters as settled. If we want to settle them before following the Lord, we will never make it. Matters concerning idols, improper things, and debts must be dealt with thoroughly. As for other unsettled matters, we should just let them go!
  • Dealing with Polygamy: Another matter Is that of marriage, many that are now saved were once polygamous having more than one wife, to such many have preached that the husband, if he was the one saved should divorce every other wife he has aside the first and if it is one of the wives that got saved and she is not the first wife, she should divorce her husband. The bible doesn’t have any teaching like this both in the old and new testament, while a saved man cannot marry a second wife nor a saved woman get married to a married man, we see reasons to believe some persons had more than one wife in the new testament church for instance 1 Cor 5.1 and in 1 Thim 3.2, the leaders were to be husband of one wife, meaning certain persons had more than a wife and therefore were disqualified. For believers, the principle is as Jesus said, in the beginning it wasn’t so, so while a polygamous man that got saved is not required to divorce his wife, a Christian man cannot become polygamous. Again Paul admonished Christians when unsaved married to an unbeliever to remain with them, we must never initiate a divorce over the matter of faith 1 Cor 7.12-16. How about infidelity, the bible frowns against adultery, as believers when you commit adultery, you sin not only against God but against man and the ground of oneness is broken. It is expected you confess to God and to your partner but that should be done with caution as another party is involved. As a general advice, you must desist from it hence forth.
