Today’s Reading: Rom 8:14-15

14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. 15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. KJV

Words of the Ministry:

Saints, today we start considering restitution under the new covenant, the dispensation of grace. As a reminder, we have seen restitution before the law where God himself preached it to certain individuals like Abimelech, we also saw it practiced by individual’s charge in their conscience like Jacob and his sons. Under the law and judges, we saw specific teachings on restitution and we saw how it was practiced based on the books. I did emphasize that there was need for God to do this as the heart of man was evil continually since the fall. Today we want to see how it was done under the new covenant, the teaching of Jesus and the Holy Spirit through the churches, I trust God that he would illuminate our heart as we study together.

First off, I like to state that unlike the old covenant of Moses where we saw a direct teaching on restitution and how it is to be done, we do not see a direct teaching on restitution in the new covenant, rather we see a few examples from which we can draw some light. For proper understanding, I would look at just two instances today and continue tomorrow.

  1. Dealing with improper objects and idols: Act 19:19, We would notice the new converts were not particularly instructed to do this by the apostles rather the Holy Spirt convicted them, it was worth 50,00 piece of silver, they didn’t sell and give money to Church, they burnt them away, imagine Judas was there, he would have advised otherwise but it pleased God it was burnt. Same applies to gambling instrument, porn, clothes etc, some may not be burnable but the general principle of doing away with them is called burning, it could be a group, an association, jewelry, television program, cell phone, association, physical looks etc that has become idols or even physical idols, when we encounter the lord, we must check out belongings and do away with anything that draws us to the world.
  • Dealing with our neighbors:

Paul Act 24.16 (Towards men), The apostle has been saved, born again, baptized in the holy Ghost but still exercised himself, no one knew the doctrine like him, no one emphasized on the new covenant like him.  Matt 5.23-Jesus teaching (like Samuel Did), reconcile with your brother before giving to God be a gift or our bodies. Restitution is not limited to our past living but even as Christian God demands it the most, e.g husband and wife, you have an argument and offend your partner, Jesus said you go back and apologies before giving, many trample on poor and weak and still go to preach, their partners having several hurt against them, they say let the holy spirit comfort her. It could be your staff, colleague, neighbor etc. reconcile with them.

Luke 17.3(Speaking to the apostles) if your brother offends you, he should come and seek forgiveness just as if you offend your brother, you don’t just say the bible says when we confess our sins he is faithful and just to forgive us, yes God has forgiven but your brother Is still offended. In Philemon vs10-11 Onesimus must have told Paul of his sin and willingness to pay back vs 18-19. From the two example we looked out, we can see that restitution is still applicable in the new testament and while we don’t depend on the law of Moses, we depend on the law of the indwelling Spirit, we would also notice like from the case of Onesimus, there was a willingness to pay although he didn’t have the ability, that didn’t stop him from being a brother as the repayment affected his testimony and not his salvation. Join us tomorrow as we consider some other examples.
