Bible Text:

Exo 32:26-28

26  Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Who is on the LORD’S side? let him come unto me. And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together unto him.

27  And he said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side, and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbour.

28  And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses: and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men.

Luk 14:26-27

26  If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

27  And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple

Words of the Ministry

As we continue with our lessons on swimming against the tide, we come to the case of the children of Israel, I like to use this account as a type with today’s church as the anti-type. The bible in the book of Exodus gives an account of the deliverance enjoyed by the children of Israel, how God brought them out from the land of slavery through several mighty deeds. Eventually as they journeyed, Moses had to go to God to get the 10 commandments, seeing he delayed, they then decided to make an alternative god for themselves, they made a golden calf just as the Egyptians they left behind, and they began to worship the golden calf. Moses on returning was very angry with them, he asked who was on the Lord’s side, he commanded whoever was on the Lord’s side to go kill his brother In the camp, only the Levites did as it was a very difficult demand but that brought them into the priesthood which was originally for the entire Israel, only the Levites produced the Levites for standing with God against their natural love.

Like I said in the introduction, the account in Exodus 32 is a type of we believers, we were once in Egypt where we practiced sin, we have a lot of our loved ones who although profess Christianity, they are still living an active life of Egypt, to them, the things of this world, the lust of the eyes, lust of the flesh and the pride of life is the reason for serving God. They don’t want to live righteously, they hate holiness, they love to be accepted by all and they believe being different in this evil age is extremism. Their fellowship is just for identification and socialization, they believe God is too loving to demand righteousness or punish hypocrites, and a little sin doesn’t really matter as God understands, they say they are born again but no change in lifestyle. Some of them are our spouses, children, beneficiaries, bosses or colleagues; we have such intimate relationship that we can’t imagine losing them.

Dear saint, the standard of God is sure and same, anyone naming the name depart of the Lord must t from evil (2 Thim 2.19). From today’s reading we see the Lord Jesus saying whosoever would be his disciple must hate his loved ones and even his own self else he can’t be his disciple, of course Jesus doesn’t mean hate as used in literal English as we see in Mat 10.37 that the Lord actually meant we must love him more than all, more than our family, children, spouses etc. We must choose him first and take such decision that pleases him only regardless of what other think, When we do this, the world would say we hate our loved ones, that would say we are extremist, we would be called names and persecuted but we must remain faithful, carrying our cross, following the Lord. Church name, title, association or reputation among men means nothing, all that matters is our integrity, may the Lord grant us light.
