Theme: Don’t give up (5)

Memory Verse: Gal 6:9

9 And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. ESV

Topic: Sufficiency of His Grace

Today’s Reading: 2 Cor 12:8-10

8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. 9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. NIV

Words of the Ministry:

Still on the week’s theme, don’t give up, we would be considering the sufficiency of God’s grace. Reading 1 Cor 12 from verse 1 we would see an account of Paul the apostle where he spoke about some unique revelations God gave him in the third heaven, concerning these, Paul said he couldn’t share nor boast but he would rather boast in the thorn of his flesh. The thorn of Paul’s flesh has been interpreted widely. Some say it was a demon, others say it was a group of persons resisting his ministry but the view I believe is most consistent considering the flow of the passage is a physical ailment that caused him so much pain. Paul said he sought God over the thorn, three times but he got the same answer from the Lord saying My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.

What is the sufficiency of his grace, why does the Lord leave a thorn in our flesh and how does it make Christ power perfect in us? We would immediately see that the vocabulary of the kingdom is in total contrast to that of the world, what the Lord calls grace, the world calls suffering. Paul answering the above makes us to understand his current thorn was grace and such grace was sufficient for him, he was willing to boast gladly in his weakness because in so doing, the power of Christ rest more on him. The power of transformation and growth in life rest more on him in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. So what we call trial were tools of grace to humble him and make more like Christ in life and nature, what a definition of grace.

Saints, isn’t this a mystery to today’s generation of believers, how would you take it if the Lord said even that trying situation that is pushing you to the edge of giving us is his grace and that is exactly what you need to be in his image and experience transformation. That difficult mother in-law, financial challenge, health difficulty, delay in child birth or even the unreasonable partner?  The indelible mark of your challenge could be working out that testimony you need in life. 1 Cor 10:13 says 3 No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. That trial is under the Lord’s watch and control, he would never let it consume you, keep trusting and believing.
