Theme: Conflict Management (2)

Text: Matt 5:9

9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. KJV

Topic:  Sources of conflicts

Today’s Reading: James 4:1-4

Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members? 2 You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures. NKJV

Words of the Ministry:

Yesterday w began looking at the theme conflict management and we defined what conflicts are and what the Lord expects from us as peacemakers, we realized from yesterday’s sharing that conflicts are not limited to unbelievers neither does it occurs only in public institutions but also in our private homes, as a result we like to know the root cause of such conflicts so that we can properly address it within the week. We can easily cast a blanket and say the devil is the reason for conflicts but that may be too general as we can’t solve the problem of conflicts by blaming the devil. What then is the reason for conflicts?

As we look at the world around us, we come to realize that it’s almost impossible not to have conflicts as we are different persons as what is most surprising is that conflicts most times occur between parties that love themselves the most, so we see that conflict is not necessarily a product of an evil desire or hate as most prolonged conflict occurs even among married partners or siblings who naturally should be best of friends.

The first matter I like to emphasize is poor communication, many times, persons and communities engage in conflicts because of poor communication in which case they may be saying the same thing but meaning different things, this occurs mostly in the home, a partner could be making a statement that means a totally opposite statement to the other partner, except both parties try to understand what the other actually means, conflicts are inevitable, it I therefore necessary that communication be done with patience to ensure there is proper understanding.

Superior knowledge is another reason for conflicts, while some try to gain knowledge and therefore see things differently, the other party might not like change or new learning, as a result the one with the superior knowledge is said to be challenging the convention, that in itself could lead to conflicts, such could occur at a business place, home or even in the Church, man naturally doesn’t like change and at the same time man has a weakness of pride when he has some new knowledge, with both parties having such peculiar problems, conflicts are naturally in view except if the one with superior knowledge is humble to guide and the one with lower learning submits to new knowledge.

The next reason I noticed for conflict is the flesh, this embraces our natural tendencies to want to outshine others. Man’s natural tendency is to lust after power and other worldly benefits, man wants to be celebrated, seen as superior and better informed. We quest for fame money and power; this inordinate desire leads to a lot of conflicts among parties. Natural pleasure and immediate gratification is a problem to many and a cause of conflict. Instead of an evil quest, the bible encourages us to ask and seek God.

Join us tomorrow as we look at God’s general provision for conflict management and resolution. Beyond tomorrow, we would then be looking at specific matters of conflict and how to address them in our families, business place, church and even among our children.
