Today’s Reading:Jos 2:17-19
17 And the men said unto her, We will be blameless of this thine oath which thou hast made us swear.
18 Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou didst let us down by: and thou shalt bring thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father’s household, home unto thee.
19 And it shall be, that whosoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood shall be upon his head, and we will be guiltless: and whosoever shall be with thee in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand be upon him.
Words of the Ministry:
Today I would like to comment further on the life of Rahab by looking at her repentance and obedience. The bible says after the spies were hid in her roof for 3 days and she confessed her fear of God which was due to the great things she has heard about God. She was then given some instructions. We need to see Rahab’s confession as a form of calling on the Lord and the testimony she heard about God as the gospel. On hearing the gospel, Rahab confessed to the almightiness of God and immediately from that point was willing to make a costly decision for God. Keep in mind soldiers came asking of the spies, if they had realized she was hiding the spies, the king of Jericho could have demanded for her head. Rahab knowing this still chose to stand by the God of Israel, she chose possible death to living in favor with the king.
Immediately from the encounter Rahab had with the spies, she began to take some instructions that would keep her alive. She was told that in order to stay alive, whenever the Israelites come destroying the land, she needed to tie a scarlet thread by her window, the same scarlet tread by which she saved the spies from the soldiers. The implication of this is just as she expressed faith on the day she saw and heard the Israelites, she must hold unto her faith believing in the same God on day they return, faith here is signified by the scarlet thread. As funny as it may have appeared that a mere thread could save someone where there is war, killings, and pandemonium, so it sounds funny that believing and confessing the Lordship of Christ could save us from the impending danger of hell and sin.
Saints, the principles of God are the same, God wanst us to not only have a godly fear or confess him, he also wants us to obey him. Our faith in God is expressed by our obedience to him., There is no way we can say we love God without obeying him, we must obey him in little and simple matters. Obedience is better than sacrifice. Abraham obeyed God and he was said to be righteous. Many todays would argue that emphasizing on obedience is teaching works but they forget that their faith without works (works of righteousness) is vain. May God grant us light.
