Topic: The Church at Thyatira (Church full of Sacrifices)
Text: Rev 2:18-23
18 And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write; These things saith the Son of God, who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and his feet are like fine brass;
19 I know thy works, and charity, and service, and faith, and thy patience, and thy works; and the last to be more than the first.
20 Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols.
21 And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not.
22 Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds.
23 And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.
Words of the Ministry
The fourth letter was written to the Church in Thyatira, in the Greek it means sacrifice of perfume or unceasing sacrifice. From our last study of the Church at Pergamos we saw the activities of Satan introducing worldliness to the Church of God. In Thyatira, we see another dimension as the Church which is meant to be a woman, the bride of Christ now has within her another woman, figuratively called Jezebel who acts as a prophetess. To be a prophetess is to speak for God, bringing God’s timely word to the People.
Jezebel here just like the account in the 1Kings 16, as an adulterous woman within the Church did not limit her evil to what was obtainable in Pergamos but went further to act and teach as an oracle of God, seducing the servants of God to commit spiritual fornication and eat food scarified to idols. Here we see a serious drift to becoming an apostate Church, a well-established system that reproduces servants of God that go out to replicate its errors. We see in Thyatira how the evil of backsliding could be institutionalized, the Church emphasized on sacrifices outside Christ, there was always a need to do something in addition to what Christ has done. Jezebel became the Lord of the Church raising prophets to teach her false doctrine of spiritual fornication and food scarified to idols.
Spiritual fornication is to have our devotion to any other thing or being outside Christ, it could be an item, a person or an organization. When our worship and allegiance is not devoted wholly to Christ and to his kingdom but the things we get from him, we engage in spiritual fornication, when we feed on any other spiritual food and not Christ we eat food sacrificed to idols. When we look around today, we see the workings of Jezebel everywhere, we see a system that exalts the teachings and views of a man. We see a wide reach of individuals spreading to many local Churches in different parts of the world, replicating the errors of their mother Churches, teaching the doctrines of men and idol worship.
To this Church, the Lord said he would cause a great tribulation to come on her and those that commit adultery with her. He would kill her Children; those she has raised to be like her. God said he would judge the Church at Thyatira for teaching the deep things of Satan (Rev2.24). Occultism and hero worship is the deep things of Satan, we see Jezebel not only practicing this evil but exporting it to her branches by raising sons. The Lord is against you and except you too repent as an individual, Church or system, you would face the wrath of God. In today’s Church system, we have clans and descendants, individuals that have made themselves institutions, they have a far reaching influence on younger and smaller Churches and through their influence they spread their false doctrine, hero worship and mammon worship. May the Lord grant us light.
