Throughout the week, we have been considering the temptation of Jesus and we have seen how he mastered the devil by the power of the Holy Spirit, the word he hid in his heart and prayer. We have seen from his example that the aforementioned are basic necessities to live a life of victory. For believers, we are not under the power of sin, we can say no to sin because we have the Holy Spirit of God. Adam and Eve after the fall brought man under the power of sin and consequently the power of death because the bible teaches the wages of sin is death (Rom 6.23).
In Genesis 3, when God cursed the serpent, he (God) said his (Serpent) food would be the dust of the earth and when man was cursed, God said he (man) was dust and would return to dust, consequently God was saying man would be food for the serpent, every unsaved man is subject to the serpent because every natural man is a sinner and the wages of his life of sin is death from the serpent. A natural man might even hate a particular sin but because he is a natural man he can’t overcome. The world of science has tried to replace the need of the Holy Spirit for the natural man, they have organized programs to train the flesh, to withdraw from substance abuse, manage anger, urge for sex, theft etc. but it has always failed, reason is that no natural man with his strength or learning can overcome Satan, the source of sin.
Sin would always have dominion over the natural man, the only man free from sin is he that is born again, whose source is not from Adam but from God (Jhn 1.12-13), whosoever has been born of God enjoys this victory, they overcome the world, the lust of the eyes, flesh and the pride of life through their faith in the finished work of Christ (1Jhn 5.4), our faith in Christ is what grants us salvation and the Holy Spirit begins to reside within us. By this encounter, we are led by him, we overcome the power of sin, Satan and demons, all we need to do is to cooperate with him.
Dear reader you may wonder why you live a defeated Christian life despite being a member of a church for many years, you may even be a Church worker or a Pastor’s Son. The fact check you must start with is to ask yourself if you are born again or a member of a Church, did you give your life to Christ or your pastor, did you assume the status of a Christian because of Church activities or you met the Lord in a personal way. If your answer is no, then the first step is to confess the Lordship of Christ and accept him as your Lord and savior. If you are saved and still struggles with sin, look unto the life of Jesus to get help, he was led by the Spirit, have you been allowing the Sprit to lead you or do you act and ask the Spirit to bless it, Jesus was given to prayer, how is your prayer life, personal and corporate, is prayer a major or minor issue of your life? Jesus was a man of the word, he studied and memorized it. What do you give your mind to, what subject do you discuss the most, you can’t overcome temptation without knowing God’s will, his will is in his word, Be a word addict and you would have victory.
