And he went out from his presence a leper as white as snow.

Words of the Ministry

Today we would be considering another negative example who had a probable destiny of inheriting double the power of God on his master Elisha. The man Gehazi was serving the great prophet Elisha and saw the mighty deeds done through him. As I have severally emphasized, no matter how great our destiny is, our character can easily cut it short. We must therefore work on our character to ensure it doesn’t deny us a free passage into the fulfilment of our God ordained destiny.

The account said that after Naaman a military official from Syria came to Elisha for healing and got healed, Naaman tried to appreciate Elisha with gifts but Elisha refused. On seeing the gifts, Gehazi became covetous, he wanted to have the gifts to himself. To achieve this, he ran after Naaman, lied to get the gifts, hid them and again lied to his master to conceal what he has done but unfortunately that made Elisha place a curse of leprosy on him, so instead of a double portion of the power of God in Elisha, Gehazi got double portion of the leprosy of Naaman as it became a generational curse on him and his children forever.

Saints, we can from Gehazi see the danger of covetousness, how instead of a blessing, he brought a curse on himself and his generation. Many today are wallowing under a curse, in the police cell or have even become a hindrance to the gospel because of covetousness, their greed make people doubt their salvation or calling into ministry. It is a sorrowful thing to be known as a covetous person. Whenever you are asked to split money between yourself and others, you cheat them or take over the portion of others. You always want the best for yourself and that is why you are never satisfied with what you have. You believe you are better than everyone and only you have need. You can lie, steal, change figures and even tarnish the image of others, commit immorality because of covetousness. Dear saints, it’s the blessings of God that makes one rich, the best you would get from covetousness is leprosy as a bad image, curses from others, sicknesses, an ineffective ministry and eventually death.
