Today’s Reading: 1Co 16:1-3
1 Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye.
2 Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.
3 And when I come, whomsoever ye shall approve by your letters, them will I send to bring your liberality unto Jerusalem.
Act 10:30-31-32
30 And Cornelius said, Four days ago I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house, and, behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing,
31 And said, Cornelius, thy prayer is heard, and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God.
32 And said, Cornelius, thy prayer is heard, and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God.
Words of the Ministry:
Today I like to give a further word on giving of money and material seeds. I want us to note that giving is highly spiritual, it is as spiritual as prayer, fasting and worship. It must not be taken for granted as God is most times involved in our giving. The bible, teaching concerning giving said he that gives to the poor is actually lending to God (Pro 19.17), we must never take our giving for granted. When we make up our minds to gives, it must be without compulsion and when we do, we would definitely get a reward, In our today’s reading. We see Paul giving instruction to the Churches to put aside a portion from what the lord has prospered them with so as to ensure there is no collection when he comes, such collection was not meant for frivolities rather to meet the need of the saints, so while it is good to give, we must also ensure we are giving to the right cause.
In the example I cited above, the bible never said God told Paul to do the collection rather he did it because it was the right thing to do as the Church in Jerusalem was going through persecution. I want us to consider another example of a couple called Ananias and Sapphira in Acts 5, they like others decided to sell their possession and brought the money to the Church but they decided to lie that they gave all like others not because God demanded all but because they wanted to boost their ego before men, we see Peter asking them why they lied to the Holy Spirit, they later died for their lies. That tells us that our giving is indeed spiritual and God is involved, we are not under compulsion but should we choose to give, we should be sure we are giving to God. Another example is from our second reading, a man called Cornelius, a gentile, the bible said at a certain period in his life; he had the opportunity to get saved chiefly because he prayed and gave alms. Like I said yesterday, our harvest could come in diver ways for Cornelius it was salvation he got from alms giving.
We have therefore seen that all we do with our material resources and money is noted in heaven, the man that gives to the poor, he that gave alms and the couple that gave to the church, all of the examples above shows that God is indeed a rewarder. Again the bible talks about a woman who gave alms to the poor and widow in Acts 9.36-43, her name was Tabitha, she died and because of her good deeds, those she helped sent to Peter that such a good woman can’t die now, Peter came, prayed for her and she rose back to life. Again in her case we see a woman that reaped longevity of life because of alms giving. Dear saints, there are many benefits tied to giving, aside the organic benefits of overcoming the love of earthly and material things, when we give, we open doors for God to bless us, such giving could be money or material items like used clothes, shoes or other acts of kindness like helping a stranded individual to their bus-stop, entertaining a stranger or paying the bills of hospital patients. In all we do, God sees our act and our heart and he would reward us accordingly, shalom.
